Born And Raised

Our land of the free
was born and raised
on the idea that
diversity can end you.

When America was formed
it was claimed
that you can find equality
in our fine soil
That the doings of the past were not part of our future.

When America had its childhood,
we took the lost souls
from foreign continents
and forced them to do work on our land
Little kids were forced to pick cotton with their bare hands
Grown men had to carry hundreds of pounds of lumber on their backs
And women had to do the same

When America was brought up,
we had our restrooms
separated by hues of our body.
And you never entered a school based on intelligence
the only thing that mattered was the shade of your skin and
the wealth of your parents

We are not the land of the free
because we are caged in the idea
that your value is based on race

Today, America is an important country.
We have moved on from our past
filled with practices that we are now horrified by.
We have traveled away from
the extreme inequality
but we are still stuck in a rut
We have yet to figure out
that our looks have nothing to do
with our importance as a human being.
To become a better nation we must remember something that most of us learned in first grade
It's what's on the inside that counts
