I remember that incident occurred in Alexandria - Egypt, one day before my birthday I was going to turn 15 years old and I went with my mother to the shopping center, we were having a great time, we sat down to have a delicious ice cream.
- How do you feel son before your birthday? - Mom asked me.
- Happy, although I would have liked Dad to be here - I answered melancholy.
- Come on Mazen don't worry for sure he would not want to see you this way. Rejoice, you are already a teenager, you have a lot of life ahead of you, the future depends on young people like you - And when she said this she touched my shoulder and I smiled.
It was just at that moment that we heard screams and saw several people running, some coughing and covering their mouths with their shirts or their arms. My mother and I were on alert.
- What's going on? - We wonder in surprise, until we see blue fog entering the mall.
We were on the second floor and we could observe that the people who came into contact with it fell to the ground and suffered from some kind of intoxication.
Our faces changed to one of fear when we saw that these people stood up but attacked the others, biting them furiously. I looked at the whole scene with horror, until my mother abruptly stretched out my hand, because I had not noticed that one of those things was going to attack me from the side, then she threw her ice cream on the face of this guy who when looking at him I noticed his mouth with blood and drool.
We quickly ran through the crowd in order to exit through the back at the emergency exit but when they opened the door, several infected came up and attacked us, luckily my mother and I moved away from that area, but it was a bit late. Several of those rabid people were already on the second floor and the fog was catching up with us.
In desperation we decided to jump from the other side to the first floor, I had fallen on top of my mother, it was honestly not my intention but she hugged me and let me fall on her.
I remember back then she had sprained her right foot, I helped her up and we looked up that the infected were throwing themselves the same way from the second floor in a silly way.
What scared me the most was when one fell very close to us and broke his neck but began to move and stand up.
My mother could not walk and I put her arm on my shoulder to help her escape from that sector but it was late, an infected man fell on us and tried to bite me but my mother stopped him with the little strength she had left, the zombie then jumped on top of her and bit her square on the neck.
- No! - I screamed scared.
-Run Mazen, run- I heard my mom say as she struggled lying on the ground but another zombie arrived and began to devour her.
Then I looked around desperately, there was nothing I could have done, an infected was coming to my direction, I got up and tried to run but he grabbed my foot and I fell again, the zombie dragged me.
I felt that everything ended here, my heartbeat was beating in slow motion, while I was a feast served for a raging starving man, whose features were very pale and whose white eyes indicated to me the absence of his soul.
The infected one opened his mouth, it was my end ...
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Blood splattered on my clothes, my skin prickled. The infected man was lying in a pool of blood, he had been shot.
Someone pulled me by the sweater, I looked up, he was a soldier, but he didn't look like from the Egyptian militia. He took me away from the scene and more of them entered the mall armed with gas masks to commit one of the largest and most violent exterminations that I had never witnessed in my life before.
I heard gunshots and screams in the distance, I felt dizzy and the last thing I saw was a peculiar insignia inscribed on the arm of the costume of the soldier who rescued me, the insignia of the B.S.A.A.
