HARPER'S POV

"Mom!" I woke up to a piercing scream that was my own

My breathing was fast and deep, my eyes were wide and frantic, my face was wet with sweat and tears mixed together

My pounding heart was slowly going back to its normal pace as I realize what this was all about...the unsettling feeling at the pit of my stomach was quite familiar

A nightmare...

It's what I wake up to every single night. Every nightmare exactly the same as the night before...

I glanced at my table clock, bright green numbers read; 3:24 AM. I wiped at my face with the back of my hand nervously and looked around my dark room, the shadows dancing in weird angles

When I was younger, my dad would tell me stories that would make me hide under my blanket all night...he told me once that 3 am was the hour that spirits were in their strongest

I squinted my eyes trying to focus on the shadows, trying to see through the dark.

My heart raced once more as I focused on a corner of my room. there was something...my eyes widened and I froze

There was a monster in my room and it was going to eat me.

I squealed and ducked under the covers in attempt to protect myself from a monster and shut my eyes tightly, wishing that it would go away.

I hid but nothing came for me. Nothing bit me or touched me or even made a sound. I couldn't help but wait, helplessly cowering under my sheets, too scared to move or even breathe.

At some point I fell asleep because I woke up to my father yelling

"Harper!" He called out as I groaned in response, loud enough for him to hear from his room down the hall

I ignored him and tried to get more sleep. I guessed it was still early because it wasn't really bright in my room considering it was summer but I knew that soon I would regret not hanging up my curtains in front of the windows
