I lay still, staring at the cracked, peeling roof. The sound of water falling into buckets from the roof fade away into white noise. This is how I spend most days, waiting, lying dormant, hoping something will happen, maybe the roof will finally collapse and crush me, maybe Zalgo will finally find our hideout, maybe the human military will storm all the buildings in New York and kill all the remaining monsters. No such luck. I wait for five minutes, then ten, I start to lose track of time as the door swings open, I turn my head, hoping to see something dangerous, maybe a rogue monster, maybe one of Zalgo's goons, but it was just Ben, like it always is. I sink my head further into my pillow, maybe if I sink far enough, the whole bed will consume me. "Get up," Ben mutters, pulling my feet. "It's your turn." I groan and roll out of bed, smacking my face against the hard marble floor. "I'm too fucking tired for this shit," I groan, my face still sealed to the floor beneath me.
"We all are, jackass," Ben snaps, "go do your fucking job." I groan but comply. Grabbing the shotgun from the floor I muster up the last bit of strength in my bones.
