Things are incredibly awkward as Shay and I join Dan, Abby, and Jason, who's just arrived. "Hey? Where you guys been?" Dan asks, placing his hands on Abby's shoulders and resting his head on top of hers. She is incredibly short compared to my brother. Most anyone is short compared to my brother.
"I just had to give Emily her earrings that she left at my place," Shay says innocently. Well, it's not a complete lie.
"Okay. You guys ready to go?"
"Absolutely," we all chorus. Jason takes my hand as we make our way to Dan's mustang. Dan slips in the driver's seat, Abby next to him in the passenger seat. I slide in between Shay and Jason, awkwardly smashed between my boyfriend and the boy I kissed.
Shay's arm is pressed to my thigh the entire ride to Roma's Pizzeria. He sneakily presses three of his fingers on my knee. My heart is racing. Jason takes my hand that is closest to him. He smiles down at me as I lean into his chest, trying to force myself to have feelings for him. I'm more focused on the other boy next to me, quietly singing along to the country song on the radio.
I peer over at Shay from the corner of my eye. My mouth turns up in a smile at the sight of his eyes squinted shut, his mouth open, and his hand on my knee as he sings all the words. He catches me staring and winks at me.
Dan parks the car in front of Roma's. Jason quickly hops out, shutting the door behind him. Shay gets out as well, but he leaves the door ajar and takes my hand, helping me out of the Mustang. "Hey, thanks for covering for us back there. Dan would have been so pissed if he knew what happened," I whisper to Shay.
"No problem, beautiful. And I agree. We should probably keep what happened between us."
"Okay," I respond.
"Okay." Shay bites his lip.
"You comin' Em?" Jason asks. I nod my head and speed up to join him on the sidewalk outside Roma's. He wraps his arm around me as we enter the building. When we arrive at the table, the seating arrangement has Dan and Abby on one side of the table and Shay, Jason, and me seated on the other. Shay awkwardly reaches for my hand and holds it under the table, stroking my knuckles teasingly.
Brent, our usual waiter that my brother's befriended, comes to our table to take our order. We don't need menus; we know what we want to eat right away. I order a boring slice of cheese pizza for my boring self.
I look at my familiar surroundings. This is one of my most favorite places in the whole world. The small space smells of warm, baking crust. Soft background music pours out of the speakers. Small families sit at little round tables scattered around the site. I smile to myself, remembering all the memories my friends and family and I share at Roma's.
Jason's ringing voice snaps me out of my reminiscing. "Em and I have something to say," Jason announces, eyeing me. I nod, knowing what he's about to do. "As of today, we're officially a couple!" he says, smiling happily. I fake a smile.
Shay's grip on my hand loosens until he completely releases our hands. His beautiful brown eyes meet mine. There's a certain sadness in them I've never seen before.
"That's great! Congratulations you guys," Dan says, sipping his water.
"It's about time. You guys are meant for each other," Abby says laughing.
Shay remains silent.
