The big night rolls around and I'm getting ready while on the phone with Jason. Things between us are back to normal after our short-lived relationship. He asked another girl, Alyssa, to prom. I'm really happy he's found someone.
Meanwhile, I'm extremely nervous about what Dan's going to say about Shay and me. Dan has become so much more relaxed and chilled out since the night Shay took me home with him. Maybe he won't be too upset about it.
I apply the last bit of mascara to my dull eyelashes and take my small purse in my hand, shoving my phone in it. I walk downstairs and after several minutes of waiting, there's a knock on the door.
"Hi," Dan says to me as I open the door. "Wow, Em. You look gorgeous," he whispers, pulling me into a hug.
"Thank you," I whisper into his chest. As I hug my brother, I see a black stretch limo parked in the driveway. I squeal and pull away from Dan, running to the limo. The driver opens the door for me.
"Hey!" Abby says cheerfully as I step into the limo. She's sitting towards the back in a beautiful purple dress.
"Hi," I respond distracting, unable to think of anything but what Dan will think of Shay and me, but most of all, how attractive Shay's going to look dressed up. I take a seat on the side seat and rest my arms on my legs.
Dan comes in shortly after me, joining Abby in the back. "Alright, we have to go pick up Shay and then we're good to go," he says, playing with Abby's hair. He leans in to kiss her, which leads to more kissing, which leads to me awkwardly sitting as Dan and Abby kiss the whole way to Shay's house.
The driver pulls into Shay's driveway and I'm practically out of the car before it stops. I run up to Shay's door and quietly knock. I wait for several seconds before knocking again. I hear muffled screams coming from inside the house.
I tug on the door handle, managing to get it open. The steps in Shay's house are located immediately to the left when you enter his house. The bottom of the stairs is where I find Shay.
He's lying on the ground, clutching his stomach. His dad stands above him, kicking his ribcage. "WORTHLESS," Shay's dad shouts before kicking him again.
Shay gasps for breath, clutching his stomach. "Stop. Please stop," he sobs.
"STOP CRYING. YOU'RE SO DAMN WEAK!" his dad shouts. I'm positive neither one of them has seen me. Tears fall down my face as I witness Shay, the person I love more than anything else in the world, being beaten by his own father.
I drop to the ground and beg, "STOP! Please stop hitting him!" I turn to Shay and press my hand to the side of his bruised cheek. "Oh my God are you okay baby?" I ask him as he sobs.
"Emily get out. I don't want you to get hurt," he stutters.
"WHY THE HELL ARE YOU IN MY HOUSE? GET OUT NOW," his dad's voice booms in my ear.
"Em. Go. I'm okay," he lies.
"SHUT UP," his dad screams as he connects his fist with Shay's face, gaining a startled whimper from Shay.
I run out of the house and throw open the door of the limousine. "DAN!" I shout. "DAN COME HERE NOW IT'S AN EMERGENCY!" I scream as tears violently fall from my eyes.
"What's wrong?" Dan says, pulling away from Abby and jumping out of the car.
"S-Sh-...Shay's dad is beating him up and I don't know what to do," I sob.
