The rest of dinner is painfully awkward. I long to feel Shay's warm, long fingers intertwined with my own again, but I know he must be mad and confused. Instead I focus, once again, on trying to force myself to have feelings for Jason. But, as has happened before, I can't seem to shake the other boy's image from my mind.

An hour and a half later, everyone is back at my house. Jason decides to leave almost as soon as we return.
"Bye babe," he says, sloppily pressing a kiss to my cheek. I try not to cringe.
"Bye Jason," I say, smiling up at him.
"Bye Jason," Shay says using a fake happy tone. Jason leaves my house and I breathe a sigh of relief. Dan and Abby settle into the living room to watch a movie as Shay pulls me into the kitchen.
"You have a boyfriend?" he asks, the same disappointment and sadness in his eyes.
"Shay, I'm so sorry-" I start.
"Save it. Why would you go along with the kissing and hand-holding if you have a boyfriend? I don't understand that."
"It's not easy, okay! It's harder than you'd think trying to fight feelings for one person while you pretend to love another." It slips out of my mouth before I have time to think about what I'm saying. I just confessed my feelings for him.
"What?" Shay whispers.
"Forget it," I say.
I turn to walk away, but Shay grabs my wrist and holds me back. He moves his hand from my wrist down to my hand and softly grips it as he says, "Who's this other person?"
My cheeks burn with embarrassment. I must look like a tomato.
"I also happen to have feelings for someone I shouldn't have feelings for. She's smart. She's beautiful. She's hilarious." With each word that escapes his lips, Shay inches closer to me. "She's sweet. I know it's completely wrong for me to like her, but I do. I can't help it. She's amazing."
With that, Shay's eyes flutter shut. He gently places the fingers of one of his hands to my chin and presses his other hand on my hip. I grip the sides of his tee shirt and pull him closer to me as his lips forcefully press to mine. The trace of innocence our last kiss held is no longer present. My back is pressed against the wall as Shay kisses me. I move one hand to his hair and destroy the gelled style it always has. Shay teasingly sucks on my bottom lip and I lightly kiss his jawline.
Realization hits me and I remember that Dan is in the next room. He could walk in at any time and catch Shay and me. I place my hands on either side of Shay's face and pull away. I rest my forehead on his. "We better stop. Dan could walk in at any time," I say. "And I have a boyfriend," I add.
"Yeah, me," Shay says, smirking and poking my cheek.
"No, Jason," I respond, laughing.
"Who's Jason?" he asks, kissing my lips.
Giggling, I ask Shay, "Ugh, why do you have to be so freaking cute?"
