Their walk at the pier was filled with laughs and smiles. Winning prizes of all sorts and eating food until their stomachs were filled to the brim. Seungwan and Sooyoung had decided to finally leave their home that New Year's Eve to celebrate outside, which had proved to be fulfilling.

The boardwalk was a lot quieter than expected, yet still busy enough to keep the pop-up stands on their toes. Once in a while they would stop at a contender, maybe look around, but for the most part they kept the night to themselves. Chatting with their partner was all they needed.

Their relationship was quite new, only starting a couple of months ago. But those few months were all they needed to know that the word 'crush' was such a big understatement. It was unfortunate that they had no label for their relationship, yet both felt they were ready to call it something more. Though they had not voiced their feelings for any confirmation, there was still a lingering worry that the other might turn them down.

It was nearing midnight when their walk began to near the end. The two walked side by side, watching the water as it rose up and down. Sometimes cashing into the strong, wooden pillars that held them up. Any hint of sunlight was far gone by now, only the stars and clouds were visible by lanterns set out just for that night. This was when Sooyoung's anxiety started to skyrocket.

Call it irrational or whatnot, but she had a horrible fear of fireworks. It seemed that the pretty things that light up the sky with explosions were keen on scaring her. She didn't know when or how this started, but she knew that she had to get out of there soon. While the shorter trained her eyes on the sky, she could feel a mental, pulsating count till midnight. "W-wan, could we get out of here. We have work tomorrow and I don't think we'll get any sleep..."

"Don't you want to see the fireworks?"

"It's already late and I-I'm just worried you won't wake up like usual."

"Let's just see a few, please?" Oh, how she hated those puppy eyes. They could make her do anything for the latter and melt her heart in seconds, but this overrides that. Sooyoung had not brought up the topic of her phobia, but right now she was shaking. Seungwan hadn't noticed, her eyes focused and awaiting. Her smile was the one that stirred hearts as well as broke them.

The significant whistle of 'one' meant it was midnight; Sooyoung felt like hiding. By the time the loud boom cascaded in the air her eyes were teary, she was frightened, and her knees felt like giving out. With a sudden movement, she turned her body from the night sky and bright lights. This didn't go unnoticed to Seungwan.

A few tears slipped from her tightly closed eyes and in instinct, her hands covered her ears. The taller's body shook violently as more booms pierced their way through her eardrums. She just wanted it to stop. All of it. She wanted to hug her knees on the floor and bury her head in her hands. She wanted out.

Worrying out of her mind, Seungwan breathed in deeply. Feeling something soft touch her hands, Sooyoung's eyes shot open to be met by another set of hazel brown. The shorter offered a sad smile, feeling hurt by the sight of someone she cared for dearly in such a state.

The pads of her thumbs graced underneath her eyes, wiping away the start tears. Seungwan swallowed hard and went back to covering her ears, adding another layer of protection from the loud sounds. They continued to stare into each other's eyes, finding comfort and solace in one another. Though Sooyoung still flinched whenever a blast made its way through, she felt better.

I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. She read the older's lips. Words wanted to come out of her mouth, but her lips felt glued together, so she offered a shake of her head instead. Sooyoung could see the guilt dripping from her eyes.

The fireworks were no longer coming to her, being muffled by their hands. It was almost over. Seungwan's eyes went to look back at the sky, while the taller continued to peer inside them. A glow reflecting on them made her feel warm. It was a mix of reds, blues, yellows, and greens in a beautiful arrangement. She couldn't deny how stunning the other girl looked right now, feeling her heart swell with a sense of pride.

The shorter let her eyes go back, gazing at Sooyoung and still holding her hands tight. Happy New Year. Looks like I'm spending it all with you. This made her smile. One that made her cheeks hurt.

The older went on her tippy toes, stretching to plant a sweet kiss on her forehead. Then on her nose. Her cheek. And finally her lips. There was no rush to it, after all, they had the whole year. It was soft and delicate. Full of their moment from the months they spent together, their ups and downs, and their love that was blossoming at amazing heights.

As Seungwan pulled back, her feet went back down to their original position. Her mouth went agape for a second motioning for the word 'I' but shut back closed immediately. She closed her eyes this time, mustering her last its of courage and strength. I love you.

It was loud and clear. Even in the deafening silence, the three words did wonders to her. It made her heart sacred, but free at the same time. Need, but push away at its opposites. Sooyoung's heart was thumping against her ribcage, making her wonder if the latter could hear it.

Out of all this rush, these extreme emotions she was having all at once, she knew one thing. She was sure. Sooyoung wanted to say it back.

Pushing the formers' hands away from her ears, she pulled Seugwan into a tight hug. Her hands clenched at the cloth of the girl's shirt and trembled a bit. A firework threatened her again, showing its blinding, beautiful colors, yet she had ignored it. It didn't get a single drop of her attention. It was all on Seugwan.

She dropped her chin to the shorter's shoulder, relishing in the warmth of her embrace. She felt safe, better than anyone else had made her feel before. She was different, a good different. And she knew that this wouldn't be the last moment they said this to each other. There would be many instances, late nights, early mornings, lazy days. All of them together. Because "I love you too."
