Fear will always be there whether it is in the sense of a phobia or a little jumpscare from a horror movie. It came in the smallest of panics to the outright shaking consuming her body, the latter being the most common.
There was the first, thunder. Or storms in general. The strong noise made her flinch, just freeze up and forget everything. Each boom would remind her of a past she wished to forget, like whips cracking at their will.
And then came the second thing, love. Maybe she just was unlucky or probably just attached to a bad bunch, but Jisu believed she was cursed. Love was falling down all around her, walls being mined and patched back with bandages that weren't sticky. Just like a water faucet with no pressure, no matter how much she waited or tried to fix absolutely everything, nothing would come of it.
So that would lead the girl to her third and final big fear, Shin Ryujin. Perfect inside and out, the younger sent butterflies to her stomach as well as blaring sirens of caution. 'Fall too fast and you're stuck forever' was what she told herself.
Now, Ryujin was not the scary part per se. In fact, she probably couldn't even harm a fly, yet it was the idea of her that frightened Jisu. How deeply infatuated she got in such a short amount of time intimidated her every bone. And as much as she forced herself to trick her mind, it always resorted to the source. All things come to an end, even the good.
That's why she tiptoes, even if the one and only Ryujin, all-star and icon, wears her heart on her sleeves. It was natural instinct, the fear that came with anything. And as much as Jisu hated as the other did as well, it only played like a broken record. A mantra she was wired to live by. Although at the moment, her jumpy-ness was the conclusion of the first thing she mentioned.
Usually, she could trust the weather app and whatever wack program they have, but today came down like bricks. The sun was hiding behind the dark, dull clouds meaning only one thing. A storm to disturb the peace.
Ryujin noticed the small things. Such as Jisu's constant staring outside the window or when she accidentally dropped a pot, her eyes shot towards the sky and then back down. Seeing the man on the TV had changed predictions, Ryu's mood shot downwards and she spent extra time on the web. Why? To search for ways to help of course.
Time passed quicker than usual which seemed to relieve Jisu. When the clock struck 9 pm her heart bounded, she could just sleep early and avoid it all. Ryujin seemed to have a different idea though.
She started opening the window and sticking her hand out. The roof let the drizzle out far enough so it couldn't be heard, but when the girl pulled her hand back in she needed to grab a dry towel.
Unconsciously, her jaw clenched. Jisu watched her girlfriend wipe her hands off through the crack of her door just before continuing to hide under her covers. Sleep would be good. Sleep would be so helpful if she could just do it. Yet her nerves bested her.
A flash sprinted through the dark room only appearing for a second. It was just a warning of what was to come. Her breathing became unsteady; in, in, and then out. Every second felt slowed down as she waited for the sound, her own skin prickling with the anxiousness.
Jisu was expecting thunder. The rupture caused by heat traveling through the air rapidly. Yet the only result was a muffled boom. Like the sound from falling onto a mattress or towers of pillows. She bit the insider of her cheek realizing how.
Ryujin's eyes went wide trying to search for any hint of displeasure. When they locked with Jisu's though, a sigh flooded throughout her. Her hands dropped from the older's ears and back behind her.
After bringing her hands forward, Jisu saw a pair of headphones that seemed a bit bulky. Her girlfriend also had her own that were normal. "Just put them on, okay?"
Her blanket now coddled at her shoulders and the device to her ears, she heard the quick connection sound off. Soon after her own ringtone went in time with another flash.
"Can you hear me?" The honey of her voice blocked the oncoming slams of light upon the night. Cracks of the clouds were quieter, like screaming into wind it mellowed out to be a wheeze that echoed frailly in her headphones.
The girl nodded, her heart warming by the second. A full smile broke out on the other's face. Ryujin's hand natural came up to caress the older's head after taking the empty space beside her.
"Thanks shorty." Her girlfriend's head cocked, throwing her a raised eyebrow.
"We're the same height, no, I'm probably taller than you?" Seeing she would get no rebuttal and only a sly smirk, Ryujin sighed albeit her own grinning self.
"Let me know next time, Lia. I'll be here."
The smooth ringing was delayed and a bit fuzzed out, but what did you expect from a phone. Still, the weight of the words filled her up. Jisu wished she could hear her say that without the use of any device.
Talking wouldn't get her anywhere so she resorted to leaning in. Her head resting at the shoulder of the younger, she felt content. The lightning only sparking the traces of what was and no longer the distasteful memories. It was now just a light decoration to their little world whilst the whips of heat were sirens she could now ignore.
A voice she loved was the only thing sending her to the deep ocean of sleep. One of comfort and love that whispered away the things she was forced into. Listening, she could hear the coins of fear slowly trickle off the malting pot of riches. She dived into the water glad the voice was there.
