I was walking out on the street, admiring the bright full moon and speckled stars, coming back from a short midnight run to the store. I was just grabbing some snacks for a movie my roommate, Nick and I were going to watch, since someone didn't go grocery shopping.
Oddly enough, the warm summer evening suddenly chilled and a light mist covered the moon, creating an eerie darkness. I shrugged it off, not bothered at all by the cold. It was actually pretty relaxing. Though as I kept walking, I felt a disturbing gust of wind run through my hair. Again I shrugged it off, but I soon had a weird feeling that someone was watching me. I decided to keep walking, figuring I was just making myself panic.
Not even a minute after I decided I was fine, did a shadowy figure pass by me. I wasn't just going to let them get away, clearly they were following me... Hopefully, or else what I did next would be very awkward.
I quickly grasped for their lower arm, making contact and grabbing on to turn them towards me. Their black hood fell off their head revealing fluffy dark brown hair and a freckled face. If anything I stood there in shock at how cute my follower was.
"Hey-" He said sharply, "Let go of me." He tried to wiggle free, but I stood there with a tight grasp on their arm and waited silently, "What the fuck. Do I need to say some magic word?" He sarcasm broke a smile on my face. "Now you're smiling, what the actual hell is wrong with you?"
It took me a moment, but I remembered the situation I was in and snapped awake and my peculiar smile dropped, "Calm down, I just noticed you following me. What's up with that?" I spoke calmly as it was about midnight, people were probably sleeping. The brunette just looked up at me with stunned doe-like eyes. "Uh, are you okay?" He quite visibly woke from his own trance and his eyes met the ground.
"Yeah, sorry." His voice quieted and softened, however that didn't last long, "I wasn't purposely following you, idiot. Can't two people share a sidewalk?"
"Oh," I let go of his arm, which he tugged away, "Sorry about that. You were all dressed in black and I was already feeling iffy, sorry." I rubbed the back of my neck realizing what I didn't want to happen, just happened.
"Just.. give a heads up maybe, I don't know." He laughed and I immediately fell in love. "Alrighty, I should get home. Maybe see you again?" He started to walk away but before he left completely he turned and waited for a reply.
"Uh, yeah! Maybe see you later. Have a goodnight!" I waved to him and watched him nod then finally walk off. Instantly I let go of my breath.
Now clearly it wasn't too bad. Yeah, it was awkward, but he seemed nice. Maybe we will meet again. I don't know. However I do know that I'm telling Nick all of this.
Two Months Later
I told Nick every last thing about my meeting with the mysterious boy. He just told me it was some coincidence and that I shouldn't worry too much. A part of me really wants to agree with Nick and just move on, but the other... the other says keep looking. Not only was the guy cute, but he truly brought a smile to my face. He created a spark in my dry forest of a heart.
All I could do for now, is keep looking. Although, how long could I look for. This perplexing person is going to wear me down at some point right?
A Couple Months Later
Nick pulled me out of the house today, begging me to get some fresh air and stop working for at least an hour. And so we did. We walked along the roads near our house, even to the small children's park. I hadn't been out in so long, feeling not only the breeze on my face but also a small smile felt amazing. Work had kept me so cooped up, I didn't even realize that this is what I needed.
