"VANESSA!"
My eyes shot open and my heart was beating out of my chest. I wasn't sure if Tommy yelled my name or if I'd dreamt it. I rolled onto my stomach and squinted my eyes as I looked over at his side of the bed, but it was empty and the sheets were pulled back. I ran my hand over them but they were stone cold. He must have been up for a while already. I figured that if he did call me then he wouldn't hesitate to do it again, it was Tommy after all. I lay back down and started to drift back off to sleep, but then I heard Tommy's heavy footsteps running on the wooden floor downstairs.
"No, no, no! Your moms gonna kill me, dude!"
I pushed my head further into my pillow and groaned. I knew some kind of chaos was taking place downstairs, and I was dreading the thought of walking into it.
I thought being a new mom would be fun. I thought I'd spend my days taking cute photos of us as a family as we showed Sophia the world. I thought I'd be going to little play groups where Sophia and I would make lots of friends and I'd bounce back from my pregnancy quickly but no, it wasn't like that at all.
I hadn't brushed my hair in over a week, it was constantly thrown up in a messy bun. Brushing my teeth was my way of making an effort now. My eyes were black from the lack of sleep and my bras were all ruined from stuffing cabbage leaves and sanitary pads in them.
I was having a tough time. My hormones were all over the place, my boobs were completely swollen and overproducing milk, and I was so sleep deprived that all I did was snap at Tommy. Sophia was just like her dad, constantly full of energy and she always wanted to play. Every single night she would wake up every hour on the dot, but once Tommy dropped off that was it, so I was always on the night shift.
Voula and Shelly had been great. Shelly was super committed to work but any spare time she had was spent with Sophia. Voula and Athena took Sophia for the night so me and Tommy could finally have some time for us after I mentioned it had been weeks since we had even kissed. He made a reservation at a new steak house across town and we had everything planned out. We were gonna go watch a movie, go for dinner and then have a crazy, wild night of passion. I even bought a new dress for it, but within half hour of Sophia being gone - we fell asleep on the couch and didn't wake up until the next morning.
"Oh c'mon, man! I just cleaned that!"
I smirked and pulled the covers back. I thought I'd go free Tommy of his dad duties, especially since Nikki had been putting pressure on Tommy and Vince to get back to the band.
"You alright down there?" I hollered as I slipped into my fluffy slippers and robe.
"Uhhh... you just stay up there babe! I'll bring you some coffee up in just a minute!" I could hear from his voice that he was running around downstairs.
I rolled my eyes. I knew Tommy was hiding something and usually when he spoke like that - it was always something bad.
I started walking down the stairs slowly, looking around at what possibly could have gone so wrong. Apart from Sophia's toys and Tommy's drumsticks scattered all over the place, there was nothing out of the ordinary.
I peered around the living room wall but the place was empty, apart from some clutter on the coffee table. I heard muttering coming from the kitchen, and I thought maybe Tommy was giving her a bottle so I headed over there.
"WHAT THE-"
"I told you to stay upstairs!" Tommy shrieked.
He was standing at the kitchen sink with Sophia sitting in the plastic bowl I used to clean the dishes. There were bubbles, dirty diapers and powdered milk everywhere. He looked drained.
