As I closed the door, I rested my head and hand against it as I tried to hold it together. I just wanted to get out of this nightmare. I let out a sigh and noticed the hand that Sofia had been holding felt empty.
I opened my eyes and quickly looked around. I was in my old bedroom at my parents house and Sophia was gone.
"Sophia?" I whispered as I started looking around my room. Everything was still exactly as I left it and it still smelt the exact same. Aqua net hairspray and Giorgio Beverly Hills perfume.
I looked in my closet and under my bed but then I heard this gut wrenching scream come from downstairs. I flew out of my room and as I ran to the top of the stairs, I saw Sophia cowering in the corner with her hands covering her face, and my parents standing near her.
"Get away from her!" I yelled as I ran down the stairs and slid across the varnished floorboards. I pushed Sophia behind me and stood in front of them.
Since falling pregnant, I'd been toying with the idea of getting back in touch with my parents to try and give them yet another chance to make amends with me so they could have a relationship with their grandchild, but the truth was, I was still petrified of my dad and I was still so angry with them both for choosing alcohol over me. I found myself constantly watching Tommy's drink intake and waiting for him to lash out too. My dads drink problem and all the abuse left me with anxiety, low self esteem, I was so over critical of myself and nobody could touch me without me jumping or flinching.
"Move" he snarled.
"No... she's mine!" I yelled.
"Are you answering me back?" He said as he started walking towards me with his belt in his hand.
"Mom, tell him to stop!" I said as I could feel the fear almost choking me.
I glanced over at her and she was just standing there watching.
"Mom!" I yelled.
"Mommy I'm scared" Sophia said from behind me.
As soon as Sophia said that, something instantly clicked in my mind as my dad raised his hand, ready to strike me. I balled up my fist and punched him as hard as I could, straight in his Adam's apple and kneed him in the balls. It was like she gave me the strength I was always lacking.
"I'm not scared of you anymore!" I yelled at him.
Some kind of vortex opened up underneath him causing a big gust of wind to circulate through the house. I knew the only way to get out of here was to tell my parents how I felt and to kick them out of my life for good.
"You both let me down! You were meant to protect me and love me! But all you did was use me and belittle me so that I'd never leave you!" I yelled and the house began shaking.
"I get parents make mistakes, parenthood doesn't come with a manual and it's hard, but my daughter isn't even with me in the real world yet and already I know she can call her home a safe place, where she never has to be scared or feel lonely. She won't have to cry herself to sleep, wondering why she couldn't just be enough because she has two parents that love and adore her!" I yelled as tears came streaming down my face.
My mom and dad tried to make their way over to me but the wind got stronger and they tried to hold on to some household furnishings.
"You have to tell them to go away!" Sophia yelled as she held onto a small cabinet.
I bent down next to her and pulled her into me. "Go away and leave us alone!" I screamed.
As the wind continued to grow stronger, it dragged them into the vortex as a bright light beamed up. Within a split second, my parents were gone, the giant hole had been covered up and everything was quite as sunshine shone through the windows. I was silent as I waited for something else to happen... but nothing did.
