The light slowly crept into Alyss's room, glaring onto her face. It was too early for this. She had spent a long night at work doing paperwork and she was probably going to do it again tonight.
Alyss groaned as she rolled out of bed sluggishly. She had no motivation to get out of bed and start the day. Lately, life had seemed like it was going by rather, slowly. Every day it felt like she was just going through the motions. Wake up, eat, paperwork, meetings, and then repeat.
After Alyss had gotten ready she walked out of her room only to run into the one person she tried to avoid in the mornings. Her overly cheery, morning person, neighbor. Edith.
"Good morning Lady Alyss!" Edith sang in a loud voice at four in the morning. What normal person is happy at four in the morning? Before could respond Edith went into one of her long rants. "So have you heard about Julia and David? They fought last night that caused a huge scene at dinner. It seems that the fight started because some tramp was trying to get their paws all over David and Julia saw the whole thing, and she seems to think that he wasn't making any move to stop the girl, and he says that Julia was just there at the wrong time."
Alyss started to walk towards the courier wing as Edith talked her ear off. "They broke up then and thereafter the whole ordeal, Julie was a blubbering mess after that. And David has been out sword practicing since. Now if you ask me it won't even be a day before they're back together. All lovey-dovey like nothing happened maybe even before lunch..."
Edith said more, but Alyss wasn't listening at this point. The topic only reminded her of Will, making her wish he was here. It had been three months since she has last seen him before Will went on a mission with Horace to catch some bothersome bandits.
Alyss and Edith finally made it to the courier wing. "... and who knew frogs really like blueberry pie," Edith said. Alyss had no idea how they went from teenage angst to frogs liking blueberry pie, but that was Edith for you. You never knew how the conversation would start, or end.
"Yes, who knew, thank you Edith for walking me and keeping me company this early morning."
"Oh, it was no trouble at all miss. Thank you for being such a wonderful listener. Well see you later, I'll make sure to keep you updated on the drama." Edith bounded away down the steps without a care in the world. If life were only that easy for Alyss.
She walked into the almost deserted offices to find her desk already swamped with mountains of paperwork. Today was going to be so much fun. Lucky her. Alyss sat down and started the endless task this was going to take her days Maybe even weeks for her to finish.
Alyss was so engrossed in her work that she didn't see her mentor standing over her buried desk observing her. "Alyss, are you ok?" She was so surprised by Pauline's visit that she spilled her ink all over the paperwork. Ugh, this was a disaster she was going to have to restart that.
"Everything's fine, why wouldn't it be?" Alyss said with a strained smile on her face. But Pauline could see right through her.
Pauline came over to her and started to help her clean up the mess. "Alyss why don't you take a break from work for a couple of days."
"I can't I have so much to do and not enough time!" Alyss started to go back to the paperwork when Pauline grabbed her quill. "Hey!"
"Alyss you need a break. Please take today off." Alyss snatched her quill back.
"You know I can't take today off. And what about you? You've worked as hard as I have."
Pauline bit her lip and thought about a reply. Alyss wasn't wrong there.
"I'll take a break when you take a break." This girl certainly knew how to push Pauline's buttons.
"Fine, you win this time. But please just take care of yourself." Pauline pleaded
Alyss smiled softy. She knew Pauline was just worried about her.
"I promise I will. Once I get caught up I will take a well-deserved break." Pauline smiled back and started to walk away when she stopped and turned around.
"I almost forgot you have a letter." Alyss jumped for the letter as Pauline smirked and walked away leaving behind an over the moon Alyss.
Alyss tore open the letter and read its contents. She had been waiting for word from Will. And now she finally had a letter from him.Or so she thought she did.
