Soulmate, the word which once fascinated you, made butterflies flutter in your stomach and apparently added vibrant colors to the world, now tasted bitter on your mouth, sounded hollow to your ears and brought tears of sorrow in your eyes. Happiness wasn't meant for all to feel and definitely not for you to experience.
Jungkook was like a gentle summer breeze or a ball of fire. He was everything beautiful and everything dangerous because a little bit of him was soothing but too much of him was brutal. Specially for you.
You both were growing closer as the day passed. He wasn't suppose to take so much space on the canvas of your life. Or maybe he was supposed to but every time you thought that maybe you could finally expect some flecks of joy, the weight of the words, the warning he had given you multiple times hung heavy on your shoulders.
"Don't fall for me, Y/N."
Jungkook was cruel. Cruel because how could he forbid you from falling for him? Cruel because he allowed you the access to his world, to the real him, to all but his heart. Cruel because he was so affectionate and caring towards you but not only you.
"Hey Dippy!", Jungkook yelled, shattering your trail of thoughts, "Be quick."
Dippy, a name for you, he came up with because your name was apparently too long for him to pronounce and wasted five seconds in total as he claimed. Oh and no one else was allowed to call you so, he had this one copyrighted in his account.
"Coming...", you said glancing at Jungkook who had his brows raised in anticipation. You rolled eyes and whispered, "Goofy", for which he definitely read your lips and grinned wide.
Goofy, a name for Jungkook, which you came up with in a whim under severe pressure from the other party in act. Names had to be in pair so it was mandatory on your part to assign him one and yes, only you were allowed to call him that. Copyright for this was dropped in your tabs by Jungkook himself.
How foolish!
You didn't know how you ended up with him here, at a rooftop of an under-construct building, you never knew existed. All you remembered was him waiting for you outside the café which had became a regular practice for him ignoring all the protests that came with it.
"Wow", was all you could manage to say. The city lights were utterly blotting out the stars. Only a few times a year did the mist creep over the landscape and obscure the streets below, making the whole city seem ethereal, which, you were witnessing now.
"I often come here after a rough day.", Jungkook said as he took your hand and led towards the boulders attached beside the railings.
"Oh, mind telling me what went wrong at work?", you asked, setting your bag on your lap and taking out your phone.
"I burnt two dishes and broke a plate. Obviously, got earfuls from the boss.", he lamented.
"And why so?", you countered, "I mean the Jeon Jungkook I know is very efficient."
His response came in form of a sigh and you took it as a cue to stop asking further. The silence was strangely calming, soothing in presence of him.
"I saw Claire today. She had a takeout to collect.", he paused before continuing, "she called me out on spotting me, that's when I noticed her."
"So did you two talk?", you managed to ask, mustering a smile.
"No, I just ran away. I can't be normal to her like she wants me to be, like she is to me now. I still haven't accepted that part where she left me for her soulmate. To think, the feelings for her never faded. Why couldn't she dare to defy the rules of universe and be with me?"
The thorns were gripping your heart again, creeping through the cage where it was set, make it bloom in scarlet red. It was suffocating to hear your soulmate talk about the girl he loved so sincerely when you knew he'd never love you the way he loved her, when you knew he'd never love you.
"You should talk to her next time.", you patted on his head gently, "Get a closure, a reunion or whatever, just listen to her and let her listen you. Life is lot easier without grudges, so let it go when you can."
Jungkook looked at you mutely, as if he could see you lay your soul out, bare and stripped.
"Tell me one thing, Jeon.", you took out two granola bars from your bag and offered him one, "What are you up to?"
He almost snatched the bar from your hand before giving you an incredulous look, "What am I up to?"
"You warned me not to fall for you yet you are doing everything that's making it impossible for me to not fall for you. Why don't you just..."
Jungkook looked at you with calmness before facing the beautiful scenery ahead, "You know I never had real friends, the kinds that would ride or die for you. But you have a bunch of them. Those who could kill for you in a blink.", he laughed, "But that's not the point. It's the other way round. Why was everyone so loyal to you, whether it be those two minions or Ena or Sasha or even my brother? Because you put everyone before you Y/N. Your company, our friendship ain't comprises of years and whole lot of memories but they are precious to me. Wouldn't trade it in exchange of anything."
Your mind clouded up more. Again, Jungkook was never a straight talker, at times like this he always chose to be diplomatic.
"Isn't developing feelings for someone and missing them, a terribly awful combination. I know what that feels like. If I can't give you love, at least I can compensate it with my company."
You scoffed, "You're wrong there, Jeon. Admit it, everything you blabbered was made up bullshit", you gave a lopsided smile, "I know I'm in deep shit but my hands are tied. So push me as much as you can."
You got a flick on your forehead immediately, hard enough to have your head spinning for a week.
"What the fuck Jeon-", he hushed you and shuffled a playlist on his phone.
"Shut up and listen to this song..."
