You watched as the boat sailed away with little Gage in your arms. It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining and not a cloud in sight. The little waves crashed on the beach and breeze blew through your hair. You missed it, you missed your chance to have the future you were willing to fight so hard for with Newt. He was gone as was your brother and all your friends. You took a deep breath, letting all of that soak in.
You didn't try calling Newt's name again, there was no way that he or anyone would have heard you. You just watched as the big ship drove away to the Safe Haven. You put Gage back on the ground and he stood looking outwards, his hand gripping yours.
"What's our plan now?" Gage asked and you looked down to meet the little boy's eyes. You couldn't tell what he made of the situation, but he didn't seem all that worried or sad. He's used to this kind of disappointment, you assumed.
"Well, uh..." you said, looking around at your abandoned camp. "We look around for supplies, anything they may have left behind like food or water."
"Okay, I can do that."
"Actually, I want you to look for anything we can burn in a fire, can you do that for me?" You asked and Gage nodded his head. "Alright, you do that but don't wander too far okay?"
"Okay." Gage nodded and then walked down the docks, back to the camp. You turned back to the ocean and stared at the big boat that was making its way further into the distance.
You knew the longer that you stared the worse you were gonna feel so you turned back around and walked down the rickety docks too. You watched as Gage ran around the compound and you couldn't tell if he was admiring it or looking for leftover supplies. You laughed lightly at his curiosity and realised how lucky you were. It was hard enough to watch your future sail away from you, but to be here all alone? You didn't know what it would be like if Gage wasn't here, and frankly, you didn't want to know.
The best place to start with would have been the map room where you and Thomas showed Vince the map. You made your way to the building, walking through the empty doorway and entering. You looked around at the empty desolate room and you felt a sudden feeling of déjà vu. It was like you were back to three days ago when you stood next to Newt and watched as Thomas made his argument to break into WICKED. You shook yourself from the memory and looked around.
You made your way over to where the power generator for the lights were. You flipped the switch but nothing. You groaned and backed away from the machine. As you continued to look around, you felt a stinging pain with every step. You chose to ignore it and keep going.
After searching around and finding no supplies, you exited the room. As you walked out, you skimmed the area for Gage but he was nowhere in sight. Before you went looking for him, a thought suddenly flashed through your head. There was an old supply closet that you used to hide your stuff in, there had to be some supplies still left there. So with that in mind, you quickly made your way to it.
You were incredibly soar from everything that had happened in the past twenty four hours. It was hard for you to grasp that it was only last night that you had broken into WICKED. Only last night that you watched the flare take over Newt. Only last night that you thought your life was over. Everything just seemed so crazy.
With the thoughts distracting you from walking, you didn't even know you had made it until you accidentally ran into the door. You clenched your teeth in pain and rested your hand on your forehead.
"Shucking door!" You hissed under your breath and then opened it. You walked into the dark room, letting the sunlight flow naturally into the room. It was bare, but there wasn't much in it to begin with. You were about to leave when you felt this sudden pain in your side. You looked down to your torso and knew that the pain was radiating from that general area.
You pulled up your baggy black shirt to reveal the massive burns stretching across your stomach. You winced in pain as you lightly went over it with your hand. The burns made your skin bubble up and become a yellowish red. It stung badly, you must have been so distracted with everything else that you didn't even notice it until now. You knew these burns were going to scar your body forever. There was one burn that ran down from your forehead all the way down your neck. It luckily missed your eye and it wasn't bad like the one on your torso, but it was very noticeable. You were just happy that you didn't loose your hair.
You were about to leave, but when you turned around you saw a little figure standing in the doorway. You jumped back slightly and looked down to see a little boy with dirty blonde hair and the cutest little face.
"Gage!" You laughed. "You scared the klunck outa me!" He looked at you funnily but quickly shook himself from his confusion. You looked down to see that he had some kind of box in his hand. "Whatcha got there?" You asked him.
"Oh, right." Gage said as he walked over to you, taking your hand and walking you out into the sunlight. He then showed you the small white dirty box. It had a red plus symbol and he opened it up to show its contents, which wasn't much. There was only half a tube of some kind of medical cream and a roll of bandages. He quickly picked up the tube and squirted it's contents on his hand.
"May I?" He asked and you nodded with a smile, lifting up your shirt just enough to reveal the worst part of your burns. "Hold still, this might sting." He told you but before you had time to answer, you felt a sudden zing of pain radiate from your torso. You jumped in shock which made Gage jump back as well.
"It's okay, just surprised me." You assured and Gage nodded, gently rubbing the cream against the burns. "How'd you know I needed the med kit?"
"Did you see the Last City when we left it? I would be surprised if you didn't get burned." He said and this made you laugh a little.
"Your a smart kid." You told him and he nodded.
"Yeah, that's what my Mom says." Gage said and he wiped his hands against his pants. Then the boy reached into the kit, taking out the roll bandages and unravelling it. He then gently wrapped it around your burnt torso and covered you up.
"Where'd you learn to do this?" You asked him but the boy shrugged.
"My mom was always in some kind of trouble, kinda like you. She always got hurt so I had to do this a lot." He told you and those words made your heart melt. The poor kid never really got a normal childhood, he was forced to grow up even though he was probably only a little older then 5 years old.
"Well, thank you." You said and he nodded, tying up the bandages into a tight knot, making you wince slightly.
"I don't mind." He said, backing up with a smile. "Anyway, I did find some wood for later. Did you still want me to look around for supplies?"
"No, there isn't much point. The Right Arm basically took everything when they left." You told him and he thought about it.
"Well, so what should we do? We have a lot of sunlight to kill." Gage asked and you thought about it.
"Well, I remember that nice lady saying that she packed us some food. We'll look at that and organise them, see how much we can live off of." You said and he nodded, taking your hand and skipping by your side as you walked. He may have been a smart kid, but he was still young and pure. He had energy and curiosity. It was good that you got him out of that city when you did.
"I have two questions." Gage suddenly said and you looked down to him. He always seemed to have a question.
"Alright, shoot."
"Number one, can I go swimming?" Gage asked and you laughed.
"What?"
"In the ocean, can I go play in the waves when we're done sorting the food?"
"Of course you can." You told him and his smile grew wider.
"Number two, so that blond guy, the one with the weird voice? Is he like your boyfriend or something?" Gage asked and you laughed.
"First off, his voice isn't weird-"
"Is too." Gage said with a laugh and a huge smile.
"I actually like his voice, his accent is quite nice." You said and he laughed again. "And second, I think he is."
"I think is not a yes." Gage said.
"Well I love him." You said without thinking, and it made you miss Newt even more.
"Okay, did you ever tell him that?" Gage asked and you nodded. "So did he say it back?"
"He never got the chance." You told Gage and he looked down at the ground, his skipping ceasing.
"Why not?"
"It's complicated, I'll explain it later." You told him and Gage looked up at you.
"What's his name?"
"Newt." You said, looking out to the horizon where the boat was now completely out of sight.
"You miss him, don't you." Gage said and you took a deep breath.
"Theres a lot of people I miss." You told him. "But yes, I miss him a lot. I just hope he's okay."
