Your eyes slowly fluttered open as the room illuminated a dull orange glow. You turned your head to the side and looked to your left. There was a widow without glass that showed a bonfire where people drank and laughed like a community. You turned your head to your right to see a boy sleeping in a chair. His caramel hair was all messed up and his head was tilt back to the side, leaning over the chair.
It was clearly nighttime, but you didn't know how many days you were out. Slowly, you lifted your body and felt like every part of you was bruised. You touched the burns on your face and your fingers ran over the bubbled skin. There was some kind of cream on it that felt refreshing against it and you were glad for it.
Your feet touched the ground and you got up, leaning against the wall for support as you weren't sure your body was ready to move much yet. You found yourself looking out the window, your arms crossed over each other and hanging out. The breeze brushed against your fingers and you breathed in the fresh salty air.
Looking out to the fire in the short distance, you saw Minho and Thomas playing with Gage, roasting something on a stick over the fire. The little boy was laughing and Thomas looked at him with such enthusiasm while Minho looked determined. It must have been some kind of competition going on between the two.
You spotted Gally with Aris, Brenda, Frypan and Jorge. They were all drinking while Jorge told a story that seemed interesting considering the motions he made while telling it. You missed Gally, and he seemed to have taken your advice and forgave himself for Chuck. That was good.
Teresa caught your eye, and you thought she would sit alone moping, but she wasn't. Beside her was, of all people, Vince. They were sitting in silence, but not an awkward silence, a good kind of silence. You didn't know how she was doing, but you would ask later. Not yet.
You watched as everyone had fun and laughed. There was a contagious energy to it that made you feel happy. You were instantly taken back to the Glade on your first night. The Fight Circle, Gally's drink (which they were all probably now drinking), and all the boys. The boys that welcomed you, and only so many made it. Everything just seemed so surreal.
Just as the memories began fading, you felt two arms wrap around your waist. Then, Newt's head rested on your shoulder as he held you tight. His soft breaths ran down your neck and you leant your head against his.
He turned to look at you and you turned to look at him. His gorgeous brown eyes reflected the dancing flames in the distance. Without even thinking about it, you put your lips to his and kissed him. It felt perfect, it felt right.
He moved so that you were facing him completely and he put both his hands against your cheeks. You wrapped your arms around his waist and pulled him closer to fill the tiny gap between the two of you.
After a long kiss, he pulled back only slightly so that he could say three words.
"I love you." He said and you smiled, putting your hand against the back of his head and bringing it towards your lips again. He tightened his grip against your waist and kissed you back.
Eventually, you both pulled away and got back in your previous position with your back to Newt and him holding you close by the waist and resting his chin on his shoulder. You felt so safe in his arms now that you weren't threatened by WICKED or the flare. Everything just seemed right.
"Do you want to go say hi to everyone love?" Newt asked but you shook your head. You didn't have the energy to see everyone just yet. Plus, you didn't want this moment with Newt to be over. "How about we go to sleep?"
"What about Gage?" You asked but Newt just laughed, lifting you off the ground and dropping you on the bed. You laughed as Newt cuddled up beside you and trapped you in a warm embrace. He threw the blanket over top the both of you. He kissed you on the cheek.
"I told Minho to watch him." Newt said but you looked at him skeptically. "And I told Tommy to watch Minho. And Fry to watch Tommy, Brenda to watch Fry, Gally to watch Brenda. Rest assured love, I told a lot of people to watch him." Newt told you and you gave in. For the rest of that cold night, you spooned with Newt, finally safe.

You woke up just before the sun was about to rise. You turned over in the bed to meet Newt's sleeping face. He was out cold but his arm was still wrapped around your torso. His mouth was slightly open and his breaths were steady and calm.
God, you were one lucky girl.
You leaned forward and gave him a quick kiss on the tip of his nose. Newt's eyes flickered open and you met eye contact with him. He smiled and you smiled too.
"Morning love." He whispered, kissing you on the cheek. "You wanna watch the sunrise? It's beautiful in the mornings; plus, it's people free and I don't know how long that's going to last considering your famous." You laughed at his comment.
"Famous?" You questioned, cuddling up close to him, feeling the cold air. It was so strange how the weather worked now.
"The girl who died miraculously survived and fought her way back? Of course your famous love." Newt joked, wrapping you up tighter in his embrace. And to think none of this would have happened if the building had completely caved.
"Come on, I think I do want to see that sunrise." You said, getting up and pulling the blanket with you. Newt groaned which made you laugh. "Hey, it was your idea!"
Newt got off the bed and walked over to you, wrapping his arm around your shoulders. You put half the blanket over him while the other half was still draped over you. The two of you made your way over to the beach. When you got there, the two of you sat in the sand, listening as the waves crashed and the morning breeze brushed against your already rosy cheeks.
Newt pulled you in closer so that you weren't as cold. You rested your head on his shoulder and let everything go, all thoughts and feelings were all gone. The sun began peaking its head over the horizon, the sky turning a blush pink. You felt Newt press his lips to the side of your temple.
This was exactly what you fought for.
Of course, you and Newt only got about an hour of alone time before it was interrupted. Beside you sat Minho, two cups of something steaming in his hands. Thomas sat next to Newt, handing him one of the two cups in his hand while Minho handed you the other of his. You put your nose to the drink and it smelled strong. You looked at Minho and gave him a confused stare.
"What is this?" You asked but he shrugged.
"Jorge called it 'coffee' but he said specifically that I shouldn't drink it." Minho told you.
"Then how did you get the second cup?" Newt questioned as he took a sip, but Minho gave Thomas a quick glance.
"Let's just say that Jorge's gonna be wondering where his cup went." Thomas commented and you chose not to say anything about it.
"Where's Gage?" You asked and Minho spit out his drink, looking at Thomas worriedly and getting the same look in return.
"Uhhhhhh... Minho, where is he?" Thomas asked but Minho gave him a dirty look.
"What do you mean where is he, I told you to get him!" Minho said with gritted teeth.
"So none of you dimwits knows where he is?!" You asked, but then some screaming stole your attention. You whipped your head towards the scream but Newt prevented you from getting up.
"It's okay love, he's fine." Newt told you and you let out a sigh of relief when you saw the little boy laughing over Gally's shoulder.
"When did Gally wake up?" Thomas questioned.
"All that matters is that he's fine and having fun." You said, relaxing and taking a sip of the warm liquid. You scrunched up your face from the unfamiliar bitter taste. You swallowed it and the liquid warmed your throat, but that didn't taste much better. "This tastes weird." You said flatly but Minho shrugged and reached to grab it. You smacked his hand away. "No, back off, it's mine!"
Minho laughed while Newt and Thomas had their conversation beside you. He still had his warm arm wrapped around your shoulder and keeping you warm under the blanket.
"He really missed you." Minho said and you looked at him deeply. "Okay, and maybe I did too."
"I'm sorry." You told him.
"You bet your ass you are." That wasn't exactly the reaction you thought you were going to get. "But you saved Thomas, Teresa, and Gage. Your still alive, that makes it worth it, right?"
"I guess so." You said and you felt Newt tighten his hold on you.
"It was you guys." You blurted.
"What?" Thomas questioned and you looked at him and then he the others.
"As much as I hate to admit it, I was scared of WICKED after everything." You said, taking a pause with a deep breath, tensing up at just the thought of it all. Newt rubbed your shoulders and you relaxed more. It was a reminder you were safe. "But I kept thinking of all of you. You guys kept me from being afraid, cause I knew you were all here waiting for me."
"How can we be waiting for you if we think your dead?" Minho asked, which got an eye roll from everyone.
"You know what I mean." You said flatly, but you couldn't help but smile.
Here you were, sitting on the beach while the sun rose, next to the boy you love and your best friends. Everything seemed possible, the world felt whole to you again. You had everything, your friends, boyfriend, Gage, your brother. What could be better then this life?
You remembered being the first girl in the Glade, how your life was never going to be the same. Now you were the girl in the Safe Haven, and you didn't want to be anything else.
