You threw a log onto the burning fire and watched as the ambers and flames shot into the sky. You stepped backwards in shock, being sent back to the horrible feeling of being trapped in the crumbling WICKED building. You started panting heavily and shaking uncontrollably and it seemed as though Gage noticed this as he was looking at you with worry.
"(Y/n)? You okay?" The boy asked and you shook from your sudden trance. You looked back into the fire for a second and then shook your head away.
"Of course, I'm fine." You told him, putting on a smile for his sake. You walked over to him and sat on the soft sand directly by his side.
You and Gage had been at the abandoned camp for what seemed like days but it was only a few hours. To pass the time, Gage went for a swim in the ocean, not going too far because he learned the hard way that swimming wasn't his expertise. You on the other hand, you had been trying to think about all the ways to get to the Safe Haven. By now, you assumed the boat had already made it to the Safe Haven and you hoped that Newt had been given the cure.
Just thinking about him sent your stomach in a whirl of worry. What if he didn't get the cure? What if he succumbed to the flare? What if he died? You remembered the horrific sight of having a monster look back at you with Newt's eyes, the same eyes that would send waves of reassurance through you. You remembered the horrid Crank screech that came from Newt as he lunged at you. Worst of all, you remembered as Newt fought the virus, begging you to kill him before he killed you. What if he got what he wanted? No. You couldn't think that way. You knew Minho wouldn't allow Newt to die like that.
Now Minho came to mind. Funny, sarcastic, sass queen Minho. The last time you saw him, you watched as his horrified face disappeared behind the smoke before it engulfed you. Was he okay? You knew Minho wasn't good with expressing himself, but hiding it feels worse then showing it. Unfortunately, you don't know if he knew that.
Then you thought of Gally, your brother. The two of you had just gotten reunited and it only took one night, one horrible night, for the two of you to be ripped apart. He was a lot like Minho in a sense that he hides his emotions.
And Thomas, your partner in crime, you don't even know if he's alive. This worried you even more. Without contact with the Right Arm, you don't even know whether Thomas survived. You remembered Thomas turning to you and Teresa, revealing the blood seeping through his shirt from the bullet. Thomas was barely able to stand when you left him, who knows what happened after you fell through that building.
You had to get back. You had to tell them that you were alive, that you didn't die in that city. You couldn't do that stuck on a deserted beach, but no matter how hard you tried, you couldn't think of a plan that would work. The Safe Haven was hours away and you had no access to a boat.
"Does fire scare you?" Gage asked, shaking you from your deep thoughts. You looked over at him confused. "You looked scared."
"Oh, that was... well, I don't know." You told him, thinking back to your moment at the fire. It didn't occur to you that you looked scared, but you felt yourself tremble going back to those memories. "I almost died because of fire."
"In the city?"
"Yeah kid. Remember when I told you I was in a building when it caved in?" You asked and he nodded. "Well, there was a lot of fire surrounding me. If I had taken one wrong step then I would have died."
"You know what scares me?" The boy asked and you turned to look at him.
"What?" You asked with a smile.
"WICKED. They're mean." He told you and you laughed.
"Yes they are."
"And those launcher things, don't want to get in the way of one of those." He told you and you laughed again, shaking your head in a agreement.
"You can say that again." You told him from experience and then Gage came around and laid his head on your lap, looking up to the star filled sky. You wrapped your arms around him and looked deeply into the fire.
"Can you tell me a story?" Gage asked and you looked down to his pretty little eyes. You smiled down at him and laughed.
"Gage, I basically told you all of them on the car ride here." You told him but he shook his head, closing his eyes at the sound of your voice.
"I know, but you have to have more right?" He said, followed by a big yawn.
"Alright, okay." You said, thinking about something that you hadn't told him yet.
"Alright then, if you insist." You said ominously. "Let me indulge you on my first kiss with Newt then."
You laughed at the sight of Gage's eyes shooting open and him laughing.
"No! Ew, that's gross! That's not what I meant, like a cool story!"
"Okay, give me a second." You said and Gage shut his eyes again. Then it hit you. "Alright. So you know my friend Minho? Well our original plan to save him was attacking this giant train he was on."
"Were you on the train?"
"No, I had different important role." You told him.
"What's that?"
"Well if you be quiet." You smiled, tickling the boy and making him laugh. "Then I'll tell you."
"Okay, okay!" He said as he laughed and you stopped tickling him, wrapping him in an even tighter hug.
"So while my friends Vince, Thomas and New-"
"Your boyfriend!" Gage cut you off and you smiled widely.
"Yes, my boyfriend Newt, cut the cables so that they could rescue Minho, I was tasked to help get the..."
"The what?" Gage asked but you stopped telling the story all together which confused the boy. "(Y/n)?"
"Could it-" you thought aloud which confused Gage even more.
"Could it what? What's wrong?" The boy asked again but you stared into the fire, thinking deeply.
You watched as the flames danced, the wood crackled, and the orange tinted ash glowed beneath the fire. As much as you didn't want to, you thought back to being on the roof of the WICKED building as you shot that flare into the air. You remembered watching as Teresa struggled with Thomas and how the three of you were about to give up. Then, then came the berg, driven through the thick smoke by Jorge.
You remembered watching that berg fly away as you fell through the floor. You didn't get that good of a glance at the berg but you knew it flew away. Of course it did, it had to, what else was it going to do. But that only left one question...
Did they bring it to the Safe Haven?
You stood up quickly, Gage hitting his head into the sand. You ran over to the Jeep and looked through the bag packed for you by the nice lady who helped you out of the city. You pulled out a tiny little cylindrical object and pressed the small button. Suddenly, a bright white light flashed from the object and you turned to Gage. He still looked so confused, and maybe a little scared.
"What's going on?" The boy asked and you looked at him seriously.
"Follow me." You told him and he did as told, taking your free hand and holding it tightly as the two of you made your way through the dark abandoned camp.
"Can you please tell me what's going on?" Gage asked and you sighed.
"It's gotta be deeper down the beach, there's too many building for it to land here." You told him but the boy seemed even more confused than before.
"What are you talking about?" He asked but you took a deep breath.
"It better be here, or else I don't know what we're gonna do." You told him and at this point Gage had given up asking questions.
You pulled the boy down the dark beach, your small flashlight being the only beacon of light. You listened to the slight breeze and the crashing of waves against the sandy terrain. All you could think about was the berg, was it still there? Did they bring it to the Safe Haven? If they didn't, does it still have power?
Your light suddenly caught something huge and you stopped quickly, pulling Gage back with you. The boy, now paying attention, looked at the object in front of the two of you in awe. You laughed in excitement as your light beamed across the giant black ship.
"Well..." Gage said. "That's convenient." You looked down at him with a confused stare.
"Do you even know what that means?"
"No, but I heard someone say it once." Gage said and you laughed at the boy.
"Well, I'll say this kid." You told him. "This is the definition of convenient."
"I've never seen one of these so up close." Gage told you and you let out a happy sigh.
"We'll, Mr Gage," you said, looking down at the boy with a huge smile, barely able to see his face in the dark. "This is a berg, up close and personal."
Before you stood the giant berg and for all you knew, this single ship was like a guardian angle. This berg survived the roaring flames of the Last City and saving all of your friends. Now, it was going to save you and Gage.
You rushed towards the ship, Gage following shortly behind. The two of you ran up the ramp, a clanking noise coming with each step you and the boy took. The inside of the ship wasn't the nicest, there was blood all over the place and objects littering the floor. You ignored them and kept going into the cockpit. You smiled wildly as you shined your light over all the buttons.
"Here," you said, handing the light over to Gage. "Hold this for me."
With that, you sat in the seat and twirled it around to face the console. As you looked down, you were overwhelmed by all the buttons and switches. There were levers and things that you couldn't even name. You just stared down at all of it in complete and utter confusion.
"What? What's wrong?" Gage asked quickly and you slowly turned to look at him, the confusion written all over your face.
"I don't know how to fly a berg." You told him honestly and Gage sighed heavily. You looked back down at the mechanisms of the berg and remembered something. Someone flew this ship. You quickly whipped your head, facing Gage again. "But I know someone who does."
