PROLOGUE.
I never knew how lonely I really was until the day no one realised it was my eighth birthday. My parents weren’t here to celebrate it and my brother was never home. The only person left was my maid, Betsy.
Unfortunately, Betsy didn’t even remember my birthday. My eighth birthday that I’d been counting down on that huge calendar that my mother gave me was just a waste of time.
My mother was a loving and kind woman, she was so, so generous. She always cooed me and hugged me. I always felt safe in her arms. I looked into her warm, brown eyes. Her eyes stood out. It was those eyes that my mother had… Her pupils seemed to give me an unnatural feeling but I always let them slip. It was what made her look different and special. “Alicia, sweetie. How was school today?” my mother asked me. She asked me every day after school and I always retold my tales to her.
“Gwyneth, honey! It’s time to go!” My father called from the front door. My mother was in my room and she laughed.
“Coming Harry! Just wait for me in the car!” She yelled.
“Mummy! Can’t I go with you?” I whined.
“I’m sorry, squirt. This business trip is important. I’ll be back in a few days. Your maid and big brother will take good care of you.”
“Fine!” I stomped my foot. My mother winced. She moved from her crouch position and made her way to her room. She returned with a calendar and a beautiful little box. I gaped at her with excitedly.
Inside the box was a beautiful golden locket. It was an oval-shaped. I stared at the necklace in awe.
“Now listen to me, Alicia. Wear this with you wherever you go, alright?”
“Always. It’s so shiny…” I agreed, trailing off. “But, why are you giving me a calendar, mummy?” My mother chuckled at my remark.
“For you to keep track of the days till your birthday.” I grinned at her and gave her a really big hug.
I watched my mother walk out of our big house. A ‘mansion’ was what my brother called it. I had no idea why it was called a ‘mansion.’ Before my mother walked out of the door she winked at me. “Sleep tight, squirt.” I watched her trail off in those black heels that made a really cool click-clack sound.
The next day I woke with in my maid shaking me. Her eyes were bloodshot and I didn’t seem to know, what was happening. “A-Alicia. Young mistress! There’s been a shock!”
“What’s wrong Betsy,” I asked her. My eyes were drooping slowly to fall back to sleep.
“Your parents… T-they… There was an c-car accident a-a-and… They’re d-dead,” Betsy stuttered. I quickly sat up and ran to find my brother, Danny.
“It’s not true!!! She’s lying!” I screamed at Danny.
Tears were threatening to fall and the moment Danny turned away with a guilty look, I knew it was true. The tears all fell.
