"What is mom talking about, I don't wanna leave!"

I was helping Nate pack, but every single second he's whining.
"I don't know Nate, I don't know ok? Just do as mom says."

I didn't want to leave either actually. What was wrong? Were there bugs? Oil?
As soon as Nate's finished packing, I zip up his backpack and we both walk down the stairs.
Mom's not here.
"Mom? We're done, where are you?"

It was unusually quiet in the room.
"Wait here, I'm gonna go look for mom..."
I left Nate on the stairs to go look for Mom. I could feel the sense of worry on his face, but I didn't encourage him by looking worried because I didn't want to make it worse.

I check the basement first.
"Mom? Are you down here?"
It got really cold. Creeping through the dusty corners and messy shelves I get goose bumps.
Suddenly I feel two cold hands on my back and I jump away.

I turn around. It's mom.
"What are you doing down here I told you to stay and wait!"
"Sorry Mom, we just got worried. You weren't upstairs."
She sighs.
"It's ok. Just go upstairs and tell Nate to get ready, I'll be up in a few. I need to find one more thing and then we'll leave."

"Ok."
I quickly run upstairs and find Nate. He's fiddling with his fingers.
"Nate come on, Mom said to get ready."
I say pulling him up. He reluctantly pulls out of my grasp and looks away.

"What's wrong..."
Nate's always been a stubborn kid but why now.
"I don't want to leave! What about Andrew and Brian? I love this house I don't want to move!"

Wow.
Ok then.
Andrew and Brian are Nate's little friends that live around the corner.

"It's gonna be okay, don't worry, just trust me..."
It takes a moment, but Nate gives in and grabs my hand. As we get up, we hear Mom running up the stairs. She runs and grabs our free hands and sprints out the door.
We get out of the house and I'm panting.
"Mom what's wrong?"

She doesn't answer me. She's too busy shuffling through her bag for the key.
It's almost sundown as the sky turns from blue to purple and yellow.
Finally, Mom finds the keys and she opens the door.
We all scramble inside.

"Get in get in lock ur doors!" Mom says.

Nate and I follow orders and buckle up. I'm in the back seat because I was asked to "protect Nate", whatever that means.

I grab ahold of my little brothers hand as my Mom starts the engine and backs out of the driveway.

What. Is. Happening.
