(1) DIALOGUE: Dialogue Tags

"I love you," he said.

Dialogue: "I love you,"
Dialogue Tag: he said.

LOGIC: Dialogue and dialogue tags are considered as one sentence only.

HOW TO WRITE:

1. Always use quotation marks ("").

2. Dialogues are inside the quotation marks. Dialogue tags are outside the quotation marks.

3. Don't forget to punctuate properly inside your dialogue.

Method:
" + (Dialogue) + (punctuation) + "

Examples:
"I love you."
"I love you?"
"I love you!"
"I love you..."

RULES IF DIALOGUE TAGS ARE AFTER THE DIALOGUES:

1. If the punctuation is not a question mark (?) or exclamation point (!), always use comma (,) and not a period (.), except ellipsis (...).

2. Don't capitalize the dialogue tags.

Method:
" + (Dialogue) + (punctuation) + " + (dialogue tag) + .

Examples:
"I love you," he said.
"I love you?" he said.
"I love you!" he said.
"I love you..." he said.

RULES IF DIALOGUE TAGS ARE BEFORE THE DIALOGUES:

1. Always use comma after the dialogue tag and before the opening quote.

2. Capitalize the first word of the dialogue.

Method:
(Dialogue tag) + , + " + (Dialogue) + (punctuation) + "

Example:
He said, "I love you."

RULES IF DIALOGUE TAGS ARE IN BETWEEN THE DIALOGUES:

1. Use commas, commas, commas!

2. Don't capitalize both the dialogue tag and continuation of the dialogue.

Method:
" + (Dialogue) + , + " + (dialogue tag) + , + " + (dialogue's continuation) + (punctuation) + "

Example:
"Sa tingin mo ba," sabi ko, "hindi ka baliw sa lagay na 'yan?"
