"You're so vain, I bet you think this song is about you...don't you, don't you?"
-Carly Simon; You're so Vain
I sucked my teeth the panicked tone of Kofi's voice as it resonated through my car speakers. He was worried about Louis getting jumped at the party we were currently heading to. Gabriella Wilson, one of the reigning seniors at the school sent out a mass invite for people to party at her place. She was a cool chick and her parties were known to be hype so it was a no brainer. The who's-who of high school royalty would be in attendance meaning people I wanted to see and people I didn't. That didn't only refer to the seniors.
I was driving my Expedition to the event with Davida sitting in the passenger seat. She looked like sex on a platter.
She had a sheer sequined dress, leaving little to the imagination. I wasn't upset about it other than the fact that it already perpetuated to my peoples that she was a whore. It was already enough that Louis and my brother went out of their way to disrespect my girl. Speaking of Louis...
"Fuck I care about the nigga getting jumped for? He'd deserve that shit."
Kofi sucked his teeth, "You know the nigga pissed about Shakyra."
"Fuck that bitch and Louis." Davida said, shrugging as if Kofi could see her, "If she still mad we can make an appointment to settle the shit."
Kofi went silent and I knew he was busy trying not to say something untoward to my girlfriend which, I had to respect. Still, knowing that he was swallowing his words made me feel uncomfortable and I felt the same way she felt...to an extent. I didn't like Louis' thoughts after the fact but I couldn't fault him for his anger. He was definitely the wrong person to try to chop it up with but seeing her walk past me and ignore me while looking so fine at the same time messed me up.
Again.
"Anyway yo, I'll see you in a few."
"Aight." I said, letting the call end,
We drove in silence for all of thirty seconds before Davida turned to me.
"So you're not going to compliment me?"
I smirked, "I was getting to it, mami."
"You're taking too long."
I looked over at my girlfriend and smirked.
"You look nice." I defaulted, "Especially your hair."
I was being genuine though. Davida's hair was pressed so it fell down her back. It was different than her usual curls which would've been good enough for me. It added a layer of sexiness that's usually reserved for nights like this. I had to admit to wishing we weren't going to this party but after getting hyped up for it the whole week, I had to at least show my face for thirty minutes. As dubious as I felt, the only thing I was concerned about was plugging my girlfriend.
"Thanks, Papi." she said, "Maybe your eyes can stay on me the whole night and not other bitches."
Davida said the rest of her sentence in a low voice so I didn't respond to it. I had assumed she meant Shakyra but I wasn't going to clarify that. Really and truly it hadn't even been a week in and I was tired from the drama already. I'd already gotten into it with her for stepping to Shakyra in the first place. Our laundry was dirty and if we were going to be together she had to swallow that shit. It wasn't like I was happy to see my ex with a whole other dude but I had to face up to the fact that I did her wrong on a few levels. The fact of the matter was if Shakyra decided to take things to another level, Davida would be in the wrong across the board. As much as the situation was sloppy, things were what they were.
