CHAPTER ELEVEN • PRETTY BOYS
∆∆∆
"they're really gonna have a practice match with dateko," kana whispered to herself, as she was walking towards the entrance of the gymnasium.
she felt relieved that erina, the senpai she was talking about earlier, let her off early and said that she understood how kana wanted to watch her best friend's practice match. besides, erina said that the cheerleading club would often cheer for the volleyball club anyway and it would be nice to check out the team that they were counting on.
even the whispers of the students she passed by earlier fueled the excitement she felt for the practice match, seeing how they all seemed hyped for what the result might be. shiratorizawa was known for being a great team, if not the best. and dateko, on the other hand, is known for their formidable iron walls.
"kana!"
once she stepped foot inside the gym, she flinched after hearing her name being called right off the bat. before the girl could even react, she noticed a ball flying her way but she did not move an inch out of shock. however, when she closed her eyes and waited for the impact, it never came. only the sound of a ball hitting someone's wrists and then bouncing on the gymnasium's floor could be heard.
opening one eye, kana was surprised to see a mop of brown hair in front of her— it was a male wearing a jersey. he must have received the ball before it could even hit kana herself.
"hey, are you alright?" the male asked, making kana open both of her eyes and face the male.
she was surprised to see that it was dateko's very own futakuchi kenji.
"y-yes! thank you..." she trailed off, so the brunette gave her a seemingly mischievous smile before speaking.
she felt starstruck standing right in front of futakuchi, the one she had been telling shirabu about. it would be a lie if she said that futakuchi wasn't a pretty boy. indeed he was, that's why she found herself getting lost into his eyes.
"futakuchi kenji. you're...?"
before kana could even open her mouth to introduce herself properly to him, she felt someone shaking her shoulders and dragging her away from the dateko player.
the girl almost stumbled on her own feet if not for the guy who was shaking her earlier steadying her. she blinked rapidly, trying to understand the situation. things were going too fast for her liking— one moment she was going to the gym, next she almost gets hit by a stray ball because she was distracted by her name getting called, and futakuchi comes in to save her, and now someone dragged her away before she could even get a chance to get futakuchi's digits.
"kana! you should be more careful sometimes!" she heard a familiar voice scold her, and only when she heard him speak did she realize that it was her best friend himself.
"k-kenjiro! i'm sorry! i was distracted when you called my name earlier that i didn't have time to receive the ball or dodge it." she explained, widening her eyes after seeing shirabu looking so frustrated.
"ah, whatever. at least you didn't get hurt," he muttered, "i would've saved you from getting hit if it weren't for that snotty brat getting in my way."
"huh? what do you mean?" kana asked, tilting her head to the side as she furrowed her brows.
"nothing, now go sit next to coach on the bench. he's been looking for you since earlier." shirabu said, rolling his eyes and then placing his hands on kana's shoulder to push her towards the coach while they were walking.
those who had always seen shirabu and kana together would think it was just a best friend thing, since both teenagers had been known to be the best of friends. although an unlikely pair (as some would like to think of it that way), the two seemed to be the only ones to know each other like the back of their hands.
however, on dateko's eyes, it seemed more like the young setter was dating the tomato-haired female.
"hey, futakuchi. you were about to make moves on the pretty girl, weren't you? too bad she's dating that second year setter from shiratorizawa," someone from dateko said, making the brunette roll his eyes before continuing with his stretching.
"whatever."
hearing the conversation from the other side of the court, shirabu couldn't help but smirk at the thought of futakuchi feeling like he didn't have any chance at all. although the copper haired male didn't like to admit that he actually started liking kana, he couldn't deny that he felt relieved futakuchi was out of the way already. at least, that was what he thought.
tendou, who was quietly observing the situation with a smirk on his face, chuckled as he continued warming up. he told himself, he sure hoped shirabu would come to his senses before anyone else could take kana away from him.
ah, pretty boys and their rivalry over our little miss tomato, tendou thought, shaking his head. pretty sure that futakuchi guy was about to ask kana-chan's number, too. shirabu must be relieved.
"what are you smirking about, tendou-san?" shirabu asked, his brows furrowed as if he was irritated about something— or perhaps someone.
"oh, nothing. just a little drama that's too entertaining to watch."
