Mai was getting ready to go out to his appointment. He could clearly hear inside his head Yok complaining at him about his delay. The sided smile lifting his lips just a bit and without touching his eyes:"P'Mai, don't you love me? Why do you keep me waiting for so long, huh?"
And those round gloomy eyes could melt his heart, but he never told him this. It was supposed to be a secret that the fact of those pouty lips could make him leave the job or his studies just to get to wherever he was at the time.
He sighed and grabbed the tie. Mai was an engineer, but tie knots were a mystery to him! He could never do one of them without help and, again, Yok's voice came to his mind.
"What would you do without me, P'Mai? Don't you love how I'm always here to help you?"
But Mai never told him how important his presence was to him. He just took it for granted since the first time he saw Yok coming back with his father to fix the car that was under repair less than a week ago. Clearly, the little elf was the responsible one for that malfunction, but his father was oblivious to this.
"If I didn't do it, how would you notice that you fell for me at first sight, P'Mai? Here, take my number!"
Mai never called or texted Yok, usually was the latter who contacted him. At first, he was wandering around the town at 2 am with nowhere to go because after a fight with his father, the boy left his house. Mai then gave him a ride and prepared the guest room for him.
After that, it wasn't unusual to see the boy around his house, college or even calling on his phone. Mai always gave him short answers and an annoyed look like it was troublesome to help Yok, but in reality was his pleasure. There were only a few things he couldn't do for that boy, but he never told him this.
After checking his suit, Mai left his bedroom and when he reached the kitchen, he saw his father and Mhen eating breakfast.
"Don't you wanna sit with us, son?", his father offered to what he gladly accepted. He knew Yok would be pleased to listen to him saying he was trying to dedicate more time to bonding with his family and leave his cocoon for a change.
"You're such a nice guy, but it is hard to see this through your menacing facade, P'Mai! You're lucky that I'm patient!", Yok complained 2, 3, dozens of times to him.
And the boy was right. Not everyone had the mood to wait for him to be comfortable to share his real self with them. Pond had gotten tired after a few tries, until his lack of response made her travel to the United States and never return contact with him again. He was sad about that, but rarely had the time to think about it, since Yok always popped up to bother him on the most random days.
"Don't be sad, P'Mai! I'll never leave you, ok?", the boy promised, but the senior never told him how much he trusted these words.
After eating and washing the plates, Mai headed to the garage and climbed his motorcycle. He loved the motor sound on his ears because it reminded him of Yok giggling every time he gave him a ride.
"It's like a lion is roaring in my heart!", the boy explained to him between laughs. Mai never told him how much he loved to see Yok smiling freely like that.
He knew Yok had a difficult relationship with his parents and was going through some troubles at school, but he was a nice kid and Mai tried to give him advice. "Smoking doesn't do you any good, Nong!", "How are you gonna kiss someone if your breath smells like tobacco?", he used to say.
"Well, are you worried that I might possibly kiss someone else or this really is because of the cigarettes, P'Mai? I could tell you sound a little jealous!", Yok teased him once, clearly trying to change the topic and succeed because that made Mai blush so hard that he fastly recalled starting to work on a car that should be done until the end of the day for that client.
"One of these days you're gonna regret of not telling what you fell for me, P'Mai!", Yok jokingly threatened him.
If he only knew it better...
The traffic was nice on that sunday morning and Mai didn't have trouble getting to that place. Before entering to meet Yok, he decided to buy a bouquet of roses from the sweet lady that had a stand over there. He was sure Yok would like them very much.
The place wasn't crowded and soon Mai got to the specific spot where Yok was waiting for him.
Everything went silent for a minute or two, he wasn't sure because that feeling was always overwhelming for him. It was like a punch in his stomach to see that sight, but he managed to spill a few words.
"Hello, Nong! How are you?", he whispered without getting an answer.
He breathed in and out for three times and bent to lay the bouquet on the grave Yok was resting on.
"I know you love flowers, so I brought those for you, sweet boy…", Mai struggled with the lump on his throat to say that.
"I miss you, Yok. Which is a bit weird because everywhere I go, I can clearly see you around me talking and smiling at me."
Mai grabbed something in his pants' pocket and took it to his lips.
"But one thing I can never feel again is your tobacco kiss, so I kinda became addicted to these things… Ironic, right?", Mai explained, blowing the smoke with the cigarette between his long fingers.
"I also expect you to know that my heart will never get used to your missing either. So I hope to see you soon, my sweet boy… I have so many things to say to you...", Mai said, a tear falling from his eye as he left the cemetery.
