Freddie had fallen asleep at last. His beautiful half open mouth showed his protruding incisors that he tried always to hide while he was awoke.
He had been through all the possible states; pain, rage, revenge desires, regret, violence. Never before I had watched Freddie crying like that and that broke my heart.
Most of the time he put the blame on me for everything. He even reproached me not letting him see his cat's body and taking charge of his cremation without telling him. He demanded me the name of the person who had been so careless to this could happen. After assuring him I didn't know anything and I just found his lifeless body, he got even angrier. He was attacking me for a while in his feverish act of pain and I weathered the storm the best I could.
Finally I got to take him to bed, undress him and tuck him in. There was no consolation for him so I must struggle to make my presence useful. I couldn't leave him alone in that state.
The sorrowful sighs after the crying, gave way to a strange relaxation. He was lying face down on bed with his head cocked on one side and I climbed over his body trying to serve him as his blanket while I stroked the hair in the back of his head.
- Are you leaving? -he ended up asking me with his mouth stuck to the pillow.
- I think I couldn't even if I wanted to. Your tears are mine, honey.
And with his last sigh, he fell asleep.
- Hi, my sweetie. You are free of not answer me. If you read this and you don't reply, I won't get angry. I trust you haven't mention my name inside that kitten's sad accident. If you have I would have to change my plans and you would end up really badly. I think you already know that, right? Anyway, I trust in your wise judgement and your prudence.
Goddamit, of course I would answer her.
- The score is still 1-0 on your favour and I hope you understand that in war as well as in love, everything goes.
I lit up a cigarette to calm down my nerves after reply her and stood staring at the screen some minutes, as though at any moment her answer would appear. I didn't tell him Killer was the instigator of all and of course I didn't tell him the neighbour's dog was the killer because it was probably one more of Killer's lies. She didn't care about destroying people's lives but if I could avoid it I was going to refrain her irrational thirst of hurting. I was only interested in keeping him company with his sorrow and joined it with mine to get on with it. I kept my phone when I saw Freddie moving, starting to stretch himself. He opened first his right eye and then he closed it again, folding his upper lip.
