JUST A SAFE PLACE TO HIDE

Suddenly the phone rang  and I started. I let it ring, but once it stopped, its annoying sound started over again and seeped through my numb brain.

At last, forced to react, I got up from the bathroom floor to pick it up. There were just a few people who had my number but all of them were important for me. And if the phone rang so insistent, it might be important.

- Hello?

My voice was shaky. I wasn't dressed yet, half naked in that always cold flat and started to shiver helplessly.

- Mousy? What are you doing at home? I knew that you were still there.

Freddie's voice this time didn't help to calm down my restlessness. He had that disturbing tone and I was not in the mood for a mercurial tantrum. I stroked my messy hair with my hand and brushed it off my face. I wanted to talk, but the voice could hardly let out and I knew that if I let out a sound, it would be a sob.

- Eli? Are you there?

- Yee yes.

I knew that Freddie could breath my anguish, my sadness, my restlessness through the phone. I cleared my throat trying to change my tone.

- As you didn't come home we are already at Country Cousins. When will you come here?

- No... I don't think I can come up.

- Come on, the other birthday girl is already here. She's very drunk and probably high. She's sliding down the banisters and jumping to the floor like a frog. She will end up breaking her neck.

- Funny... -I said not aware of what I was saying.

In truth, if he had told me she was unconscious in the middle of a pool of blood, I would be unmoved. It was like there was nothing but Freddie and me. Everything else didn't make a fucking sense. We were encircled by a halo, a deathly halo.

- Don't be mean, darling. Come on, wear anything and come. Sharon is asking about you.

Sharon? Had Elton John self invited to my birthday party? I could imagine the soirée Freddie had thrown and just the vision of a crowded place, made me sick.

- I can't.

- What's wrong?

We both are infected with a unpleasant virus and Joe might be infected too.

- I don't feel fine.

- Tell me what's wrong. It's your birthday, why can't you simply be on time at least?

- Freddie, if you go on shouting at me I'm gonna hang up on you. NOW.

- Well, then give me a reason to not coming.

- I can't talk now.

- Damn you, we've thrown a big party just for the two of you. If you don't come soon, Nina will drink all the alcohol. Hurry up.

- Can't you understand? I CAN'T GO.

- Are you so ungrateful with our struggling?

- At least you have Nina.

- I can't believe you are doing me this.

- I'm so sorry. I'm justified for it.

- Tell me your reasons right now! Do it, fuck!

An uncontrollable sob choked my voice and covered my mouth to hide it. I couldn't hide it from him.

- I'm hanging up. I'm coming there.

- Fred, no. Don't come.

He had already hung up. I stood there hearing the monocord sound of the line. I left the phone over the table and started to search some clothes to wear, I was still with my underwear and stockings. I had to hurry up or Freddie would arrive. I wasn't in the mood to confront him. I didn't feel like telling him a lie to justify my sorrowful state, my brain was too numb.

The only reliable and fast way and obviously cowardly that left me was taking Turn back the Time and run away. Running away from my awful birthday party in 1978 and find some place where I could cloaked my pain and stunning.

I wasn't aware what I was putting on, just did it like a robot. I grabbed my bag and put it into what I came up with. All the HIV rapid tests that I had. I couldn't leave there any suspicious trace. I checked all the contents in my bag. My bag was my only suitcase to a destination that I haven't yet decided and there was no time to decide.

I shivered as though under my feet was gaping a deep fissure. I grabbed my phone and struggling I accessed to the app. Turn back the Time flickering didn't stop this time around. It loaded and loaded. It was an awful moment to block the app.

I switched off the mobile and switched on again in panic. When I inserted my password and I was at the home screen, I pressed eagerly the icon.

- Elideth Polley! Open the door!

It wasn't possible Freddie was already here. The traffic in London didn't allow that speed. Or did I waste my time miserably?

I heard two more shouts and at last there was no flickering. I was in the timeline. The door opened. Fucking Freddie had my keys and didn't hesitate to take it. I had to hurry up.
