Chapter 3: Self Respect amidst enmity- Part 2

Barrister Bondita Das, who returned India from London after 8 years to become an inspiration for women's revolution and to support them to stand against the malpractice they face, is now standing mocking them, least bothered about their struggles pointing at the lacks of her own country.

Bondita saw a file kept on the table. She went there excusing herself while Philips uttered "So suna aap sab ne? Ab jo galti kiya hai usse suljhao. C'mon clean my shoes." Orderd Philips looking at Tupur who spilled juice on his shoes by mistake. "Tupur aisa kuch nahi karegi" Chandrachur uttered in a stern manner faking his concern towards her. "Sahi kaha Jamai Babu ne. Hamari Tupur aisa kuch nahi karegi." said Thakuma sternly. "Thodi baat thodi laat tabhi samjhe aurat jaat" uttered Bondita in a strong voice coming from behind holding the file behind her. She continued "yahi kehti hai na aap Thakuma? Par jab laaton ke bhoot baaton se nahi manenge toh kya karenge? Main batati hu." She stood in front of Chandrachur and Tupur and said "Aap Thakuma ke ayurvedic davaaiyo ka business start karna chahte haina? Chandrachur was shocked to hear this as in how did she got to know about this until she showed his file in her hand. "Isi vishay pe aap Officer Jacob se discuss karna chahte the na?" She asked him to which he nodded in yes. "Thik hai ab aap inse milke baat kar sakte hai kal." He got happy and was about to speak when she interrupted "meri baat poori nahi hui hai Mr. Chandrachur. Aap inse kal mil sakte hai agar..." she paused making them confused and she went near her husband and continued "agar jo galti hui hai ussey sudhara jaaye. Tupur ko ye joota saaf karna hoga." Making them shock. She continued "Kya hua Tupur? Tumhe toh aadat hogi na apne pati ka ye sab kaam karke? After all hindustan ki aurate yahi sab toh karti hai, aadmiyo ke kadamo pe girna." "Nahi!" Chandrachur uttered all of a sudden. "Mai apni patni se bohot pyaar karta hu aur main ussey aisa kuch nahi karne dunga." "Really? Agar itna pyaar hai apni wife se toh aap khud aake saaf kar dijiye Mr. Chandrachur." said Philips with a smirk shocking Chandrachur. Signing her to speak up and avoid this situation, he clutched Tupur's hand tightly which he was holding behind her causing her pain. Finally she spoke up "Nahi! Mai apne galti ki sazah apne pati ko nahi dungi. Main karungi ye saaf." "Nahi Tupur" uttered Chandrachur faking his concern. "Agar aap chahte hai ki aapka kaam, jisse poora karne aap yaha aaye hai, usme koi rukawat na aaye, toh Tupur ko ya Chandrachur babu ko ye joota saaf karna hi hoga." uttered Bondita looking straight at both of them. Having no choice, Tupur went near Philips holding the napkin to wipe. She bent down to clean his shoe when suddenly her wrist was held by someone making her stop to do so. All of them were shocked to see Anirudh stopping her from doing so and making her stand said strongly "Tupur aisa kuch nahi karegi." Looking at Bondita he asked "Itne waqt se bas itna hi samjha hai tumne Hindusthani aurato ke baare mein?" "Waqt hi kaha tha samajhne ke liye? 12 saal ki umr mein London bhej diya tha aur 8 saal wahi rahi. Waapis aake kuch hi mahine hue the jo apno ke khoj mein barbaad ho gaye." She said making him a bit sad but quickly composed himself. She continued "aur waise bhi aapko kyu farak padh raha hai Mr. Roy Choudhary? Ye toh aapki dushman hai na?" "Dushman hai. Par mere desh ki mahila hai. Aur main apne desh waasiyo ke aatmasamman, yaani unke self-respect ko thes nahi phochne dunga, naa hi yu angrezon ke saamne jhukhne dunga ab chahe wo aadmi ho ya aurat, wo ameer ho ya gareeb, wo dost ho ya dushman." said Anirudh looking straight at the Fernsby family." All of them went silent after seeing this side of Anirudh for their enemies. Indeed he was known for his respect for women and their revolution, but this time he was neither standing for a woman nor an enemy, but for his own citizen. He couldn't tolerate people of his own country getting insulted that too in front of these Britishers.

A sound of clap broke the silence and everyone turned towards the sound which was none other than Bondita. She came forward clapping and said "Wow Mr. Roy Choudhary. Bhashan bohot acha dete hai aap par jo kehte hai uspe amal karna bohot mushkil hai." Which made him frown. She continued turning towards the Das family "Anyways, jo kaha gaya hai wo karo ya officer se milne ki baat bhool jaao." Chandrachur was about to convince her but Thakuma interrupted and said "koi zaroorat nahi hai ye sab karne ki Tupur ko na hi jamai babu ko." "Thik hai phir" said Bondita handing over the file to Chandrachur and continued "bhool jaayie apne business establishment ke baare mein." Soon a ray of hope was found for both the families when Philips spoke up "Relax darling. Waise bhi inhe dekhke lagta nahi ki ye itni jaldi haar maane walo mein se hai. So why don't we give them another chance?" "But..." Bondita was interrupted by Jacob "C'mon my child, I don't think they will give up so easily and they will definitely try again to meet me. So let's not waste their time and will give a chance." Both the families were indeed shocked with his statement and had a feeling that something was not right about him but shrugged their feeling. "So Roy Choudhary and Das family, kal mein apne office mein toh nahi rahunga so we will all gather at the Kew Garden, where you both Tulsipur and Krishna Nagar people can gather without any conflict to discuss about it. Sharp at 9am. Both the families agreed to it still having some doubts in their mind for the sudden change in this father-son's behaviour towards them. "Philly, I'm going out to get some fresh air. I'll be back in sometime." Said Bondita to which Philips nodded with a smile. As soon as she left, both the families asked for their leave.

As soon as Anirudh stepped outside the mansion, he saw Bondita taking stroll around the garden. Although he was quite disappointed with her, he had to talk to her along. So he took his steps towards her which was witnessed by both the families but didn't stop him either as they wanted to know what was exactly going on. Anirudh turned around Bondita by shoulder holding them tightly and asked "Ye sab kya hai Bondita, tum toh Kashi gayi thi na? Yaha kaise pohochi? Aur andar ye sab kya kahi jaa rahi thi? Andar sab maujoot the isiliye zyaada kuch puch nahi paaya par ab mujhe jawaab chahiye Bondita." By the time both the families reached there waiting for her answer. "Batao Bondita, aur tum ladkiyon ke shisksha ke khilaaf kyu ho gayi aur tumne ye kyu kaha ki tum ab barrister nahi ho?" Bondita who was taken aback by this sudden encounter and listening to him tears started to form in her eyes and spoke up "Barrister babu banna, unke liye shiksha ke liye prerit karna, rudhi wadi paramparao ke khilaaf awaaz uthaana, ye Bondita aur uske sakha babu ka sapna tha. Par jab ab Bondita, uske sakha babu aur uske birristra babu hi nahi rahe, toh iss sapne ko rakhke kya karu?" All were in utter shock by her reply. She jerked away his hands which were holding her shoulder and continued "aur mujhe jo kehna wo main uss din hi keh chuki thi jab mujhe jaasoos maana gaya. Main toh bas apne sakha babu ka unke liye vishwaas aur pyaar ki umeed kar rahi thi. Mujhe yakeen tha baaki koi maane ya naa maane, mere sakha babu mujhe kabhi galat nahi maanenge. Par main galat thi." Wiping away her tears she said "aapke dil ne maan liya tha ki Bondita jaasoos nahi hai phir bhi aap chup the kyuki aapke liye Krishna Nagar se dushmani apni Bondita se badhakar thi. Jo Bondita dosti aur pyaar ka prastaav leke aayi thi usse aap logo ne jaasoos mana, dushman Bondita maana." Spreading her arm sideways showing herself she uttered "Toh dekhiye, ban gayi main dushma par sirf Tulsipur ki nahi..." pointing at each of the both family members "balki poore Hindusthan ki dushman. Ab dekhiye ye dushman Bondita... nahi nahi nahi... Mrs. Suzie Fernsby kaise dushmani nibhati hai." She completed with an evil laugh. All the family members were taken aback with her reply when suddenly Philips approached her asking "Is everything alright, Suzie?" "Yes dear husband, ye log toh bas mera haal chaal jaan rahe the." Saying this she wrapped her arms around his arms to which Philips smilingly reciprocated by holding her with his other hand. This action made Chandrachur boil in jealously as he wanted claim her but that never happened. On the other hand Anirudh was a bit disappointed to see his Bondita like this with other man but soon her evil intentions overpowered his disappointment and it turned into anger. He couldn't see his Bondita but just another version of Betty Greenwood. "So see you all tomorrow" said Philips as both the families took their leave. Bondita was staring at those retiring figures with a blank expression on her face. As soon as they left she and Philips got separated and looked at each other with a warm genuine smile.
