It is read with the schedule referred that according to Section 8 of the Hindu Succession Act 1956, daughters being Class I legal heirs, have the same rights as sons to the properties of their father.
But in the era of late 1920s, it was very uncommon to consider a female child as the heir. That was the reason everyone always wanted a male child so that they can carry forward their generation along with the ancestral properties.
But due to the unavoidable circumstances, Karta (head of the hindu undivided family) of the Das family has been Kalindi Das. Due to the demise of the male head of the family (Thakuma's brother i.e. Bondita's grandfather), Kalindi Das has been the only next eldest member among them who had the responsibility towards their ancestral property and her brother's son, Prosenjit Das and Showmik Das.
Thus Prosenjit Das, late father of Bondita Das, was the real heir of the Das family who holds the large amount of ownership of the Das property. Yet Showmik Das also holds a good amount of it.
Now that Bondita being the daughter of the heir of the family, the entire property was to be transferred to her name. Apparently the Chalet and ground, which Thakuma provided them for their class and football training belongs to Prosenjit Das who being a man of progressive mind has already transferred them in the name of the successor irrespective of their gender which can be claimed by them post his demise. Since he was no longer alive, the property rightfully belongs to Bondita Das.
Bondita however wasn't sure about this. Being a Barrister, she was aware about the property law and about its possession, which wasn't considered by these Indians, thus she trick fully made Chandrachur bring the property papers in the name of business. When Chandrachur gave the copies of the property papers to Bondita (in Chapter 16), unfortunately or fortunately, the papers of the chalet happened to be the original one due to his carelessness.
When Anirudh asked that why will they require her permission to enter the burning chalet's property which according to him belonged to Thakuma, the Surveyor who was carrying the file of the property papers, handed them to Anirudh to which he asked "Ye kya hai?" "Aapke sawaalon ke jawaab Barrister babu." Bondita replied. He opened the file and Thakuma looked at it. Although she wasn't literate to read the content but making a wild guess she said "ye toh..." "Aapke jaaydad ke kaagzaat. Jisme likha hai ki ye kothi aur ye maidaan Prosenjit Das ke santati, yaani Bondita Das ka hai." Anirudh snapped in between and replied without any expression.
Chandrachur who was holding Tupur, left her and asked surprisingly "Thakuma, ye kya ho raha hai? Kya ye sach hai?" "Ye sach hai" was her instant reply and every turned towards her. Indeed Thakuma knew that this is her nephew's property but the papers were with her, then how did it reach Bondita?
"Ye toh tijori mein rakhe the, kaagzaad tumhaare paas kaise aaye?" As soon as Thakuma asked this to Bondita, Chandrachur's face lost its colour and this was noticed by Tupur who by now came in front. Bondita smirked indirectly looking at him. "Tumne chori ki?" "Apni hi cheeze churai nahi jaati Thakuma." Bondita replied immediately. "Toh ye kaagzaad tumhare paas kaise aayi? Kisne di ye?"
"Shaayad aapke hi kisi apne..." "AAH!" Tupur winced in pain due to which Bondita couldn't complete her sentence. "Thakuma, la... lagta hai Tupur ki t...taabyat kharaab hai. Ussey ghar le jaana chahiye. Aapki dawaayiyo ki zaroorat hai isse." Chandrachur stammered yet said this in order to avoid the situation. Actually it was him who deliberately stamped on Tupur's feet so that she would scream and he could get an excuse to get out of the situation. Tupur gave a tearful angry glare at him.
"Sahi kaha Jamai babu, aur Sumati bahu ki bhi haalat theek nahi hai." Thakuma said her last sentence glaring at Bondita but seemed to be busy in checking out her manicured nails, least bothered about what she uttered about her mother.
After they left, Anirudh who was near the chalet which was almost burnt down into ashes, removed his specks was looking at the black board, notes he made by staying awake all night, even the Encyclopedia, everything was
distroyed. Bondita went near him and uttered "kaha tha na?" That made him snap out of his thoughts and looked at her eyes filled with anger."Kaha tha na maine, ki main haar ka badla lekar hi rahungi." He remembered her words when he and his team defeated her in the mini soccer match.
"Iss haar ka badla Suzie lekar hi rahegi. Aur sahi kaha aapne, haar ki aadat nahi hai mujhe.Aur bhale hi main haar jaau, par aaplogo ko jeetne bhi nahi doongi.
Dekhiyega, iss badle ki goonj, poore Tulsipur aur Krishna Nagar mein goonjegi, aur aap log kahi ke nahi rahoge."
"Tum toh khud kehti ho na ki tum Bondita nahi, Suzie ho. Bondita marr chuki hai." Anirudh said in a mocking way and continued "toh aaj Suzie ko Bondita ke property ki yaad kaise aa gayi? Ya phir main ye kahu, ki Bondita sach mein waapis aa gayi" he completed his last statement in a cold huskey voice.
Bondita sighed a breath and uttered "Ab jeet ke liye, Suzie ko itna compromise toh karna hi tha Barrister babu. Agar main ye kothi na bhi jalaati toh bhi koi farak nahi padne wala tha kyuki ye meri hai. Par maine ye isiliye jalaya, taaki aap sabka yu haara hua chehra main dekh saku."
She looked towards the team mates who were standing there a bit far in a dilemma along with Eliza who was trying to explain something to them. "Thode hi din bache hai chunauti ke liye. Jaayiye tayyari kijiye." She said as if trying to rub the salt on his wound. Anirudh glared at her he uttered coldly "zaroor"
When he was about to leave she said making him stop "Aapki Sampoorna maa toh chali jaayegi Roy Choudhary Haweli. Chalo maana baaki Tulsipur ki ladkiyaan bhi aapke yaha aayegi padhne par, Krishna Nagar ki ladkiyon ka kya? Aapko lagta hai koi bhi ghar wale apni ladkiyon ko Tulsipur mein bhejne ka risk lenge? Jaasoos nahi bana denge unhe bhi" Her last statement was a direct taunt to him to which he pressed his eyelids.
She came in front of him keeping he hands behind and continued "Agar aap ye soch rahe hai ki Krishna Nagar ki ladkiyon ko wo... what's her name... ha, Eliza padha lengi, toh main aapko yaad dila du ki Soccer practice toh phir hone se rahi. Aur agar Soccer pe focus kiya toh ladkiyon ki tayyari reh jaayegi. Tch tch tch. Ab kya karenge aap?" She said faking her deliberate sympathy towards him.
"Main tumhare iraadon ko safal hone nahi dunga." He gritted his teeth giving a scary glare at her. She wouldn't lie but she actually got scared a bit by his expression that went unnoticed by him. Maybe because she was taken aback to the time when he use to scold her in childhood. Thus she couldn't say anything further and simply kept looking at him storming away from the spot.
She was snapped out by Phillips as he said "Let's go, I'm getting late for the practice." To which she nodded and went away with him.
