"we aren't racist. i just don't want you to associate with such things, such culture." akaashi's mother explained as she rode her son to school the next day.

"you need to love, like, and associate yourself with primarily japanese, pure japanese, and privileged japanese." she scowled. " and your teacher, what was it? mr. quintana...? well, he is not one of them."

"mr. quintana gave me tiana." akaashi looked to the floor "but you took away tiana, mother."

akaashi's mother visibly gritted her teeth. "tiana is not one either."

"but i love tiana." akaashi firmly said.

"and who does tiana end up with?"

"naveen." akaashi nodded whilst making the statement.

"and does naveen look anything like you, keiji?"

akaashi flinched. "...no."

"exactly. tiana would never love you back because you're different. and people are weak and are afraid of different. that is why we love people who are the same as us."

"...same as us?"

"look around you, keiji. do you know anyone in real life that looks like tiana? or acts like tiana?"

"no... we all are the same."

"yes, we all act the same, we all eat the same, and we all speak the same language. and that's how it should be. imagine if you loved tiana and tiana loved you back! have you ever seen anything so absurd?"

"no...but why is it weird?"

"because this is just how the world works. our society is like a kingdom, we must remain and ,by all means, regain order when lost. and different does not remain order. with different we have chaos! do you want chaos, keiji?" akaashi's mother looked him in the eye.

"no."

the car stayed quiet for some time.

"but is it so bad if only one person does it? loves someone different from them?"

"i suppose it won't entice immediate chaos, but that may be dangerous. you never know what is going on in a person's mind." akaashi didn't understand this.

"then it wouldn't be so bad if i loved tiana even if she's different from me." akaashi sang.

"she will never love you back." akaashi's mother handled in a tone too dark for a child.

"but that's fine. i can watch her with naveen from a distance and still love her. if she's happy, i'm happy beacause i love her and that's enough for me. because that's true love isn't it?" akaashi looked down and fiddled with with his fingers as a content smile grew on his face.

akaashi's mother's eyes widened. the line he used, she had heard before. but never before from akaashi's mouth.

——

"if you're happy, i'm happy because i love you. and that's enough for me." was once said to tsukki.

——

"mother? are you okay?" akaashi asked.

"yes, i am. but you are not." she snapped serverly, not looking at her son again during the remaining duration of the car ride.

and neither was mr. quintana.
