14. Joshua (the roommates POV)

Joshua

The room is noisy after Gun makes his announcement. But Joshua doesn't really speak. He's sad that the roommate he likes so much won't be staying for both years of his course. They've formed a strong friendship in the last one hundred days and he wishes that it was going to last longer.

But he can see from Gun's face that his friend has finally chosen to follow his own path. He knows that he misses his family dreadfully and, from accidentally walking in on a conversation overheard between Gun and his father, that there is a broken relationship somewhere that needs fixing.

But Joshua still feels a depth of sadness to think of sharing this room with someone else.

Still, when the knock comes at the door, he's quick to react and he sticks his tongue out at his friend as Melanie declares him the winner.

But when the door has been opened and Gun doesn't bring in pizza or pick up the money Joshua has thrown, he knows there's something wrong. So he gently lifts Melanie up and moves to stand beside Gun at the door.

"Gun? What's up?" He asks, throwing an arm over his shoulders as he looks beyond him to see a slim young man standing on the threshold. A familiar looking man.

"Umm, Gun?" He asks, looking between the pair, "Is this.. you know?"

The man in front of him coughs and then says something brisk in Thai.

Gun replies, but the young man starts to turn away, and that's when Johua's friend reacts.

Joshua watches in surprise as Gun throws his arms around his friend and pulls him tightly against his chest. He hears the stranger gulp loudly and then his arms are holding Gun back, eyes closing as he tucks his head into Gun's neck.

Feeling like he is intruding, Joshua intends to slip away. But when he turns to move, he sees that everyone else is standing behind him and staring in surprise at the two men who are locked in their embrace.

Joshua ushers to them with his hands, but none of them move. Then suddenly Bess pushes her way to the front and says, "Gun, what's going on?"

It's like the two men wake up, lifting their heads, eyes only for each other as they communicate in silence, then Gun turns and looks back at them all.

"Sorry, umm, this is Krist."

Bess looks between them and then pointedly stares at where Gun's arm is still wrapped around his friend's shoulders, "And who is Krist?"
