After we had discussed our quest with Beorn, he said that he would provide us with everything we needed. "I suggest that you stay for the night and leave in the morning." Beorn advised. Thorin's shoulders tensed, but he nodded stiffly. As we all wandered off to do our own things, I sidled up to the Dwarf. He looked over at me, irritated.
"What?" he snapped. I scrunched my nose up at him, holding up my bag to him. "I came over here to see how your injuries were doing, thank you very much." Thorin sighed and walked over to the living room and sat down on a chair. I stood over him with crossed arms as he stripped off his shirts and jackets. I was pleased to find that his injuries were almost nonexistent.
I smiled slightly, carefully prodding a spot with my finger. "Did that hurt?" I asked. He shook his head no. My smile widened as I cheerfully announced, "Well then, Master Thorin, I officially discharge you from my care. Just please don't go around and being a Warg's chewtoy again." A wry smile found its way onto the grumpy Dwarf's face. "I will try my best."
I snorted and sauntered away, wanting to explore Beorn's estate before we set out again. When I walked outside, I found most of the Company all over the land. Gandalf was talking with Dori and Balin on the porch, blowing smoke rings. Óin and Bifur were sitting under a tree across the yard, chatting quietly through their Dwarven sign language. I remembered seeing Ori and Bombur reading side-by-side inside the house. Bofur and Nori were having a little spar on the field, alongside Dwalin and Glóin, and Kíli and Fíli. Where Bilbo or Beorn were was unknown to me.
The boys sparring stopped for a moment, turning to see my arrival. Bofur waved his axe around and called, "Wanna join us, Paige?" A grin slowly crept up my face as I replied, "Four on four? We'll need another person." To my surprise, I felt a presence by my side and turned to see Thorin standing there with his sword unsheathed. "I will join." My eyebrows raised. A wide, fullblown smile spread across Kíli's face, his eyes shining widely.
"Uncle! You're with Fíli and I!" he insisted. Said Dwarf rolled his eyes good-naturedly and went to stand by his nephews. I crossed my arms and walked closer to the boys. Bofur immediately scrambled over to me and linked his arm through mine, though he had to make an effort to reach it. "I call Paige then." Fíli scowled at him, a pout on his lips. "No fair! The four of us would've been an unstoppable team!"
Dwalin snorted and grumbled, "I'll join ya, lad. There's no way you're gonna beat Nori without me." The Dwarf grinned wickedly, his fingers expertly twirling an incredibly sharp knife between his fingers. "I'd like to see you try." We all lined up, so that we were all facing someone. Bofur vs. Kíli. Glóin vs. Fíli. Nori vs. Dwalin. Which left...Me vs. Thorin. Oh shit. This is gonna end badly for one of us.
He raised a taunting eyebrow my way. I scowled at him, trying to get into my fighting mindset. I had barely stretched, but I tried not to let that plague my thoughts. Before I knew it, our little sparring match had begun. I tried to block out everyone else around me and focused on trying to beat Thorin while not causing him a lot of damage. Because then it would be me or Óin that'd have to patch him back up.
Thorin came at me like a whirlwind of fur and blade. It was a miracle that I spun out of the way in time to miss my head being chopped off. Now that had gotten my attention. I watched him with narrowed eyes as he turned back around, wielding Orcrist. I brought my own sword down and it clashed with the Goblin Cleaver, the vibrations running through my body and making it hard to keep a hold on my sword.
Though I was a couple feet taller than the Dwarves, their ability to reach targets higher than themselves was very impressive. I jerked out of the way, parrying, but Orcrist nicked my cheek as I pushed it away from my body. Sometime during our spar I was able to cut his lip, blood drawn and dropping down his chin.
