Backstory: The Nine Hollow Gods once ruled the 9 sections of Heuco Mundo in peace, killing any hollow who stepped out of line and helping keep the balance of souls, by allowing any excess souls to be eaten by hollows and preventing hollows from eating any souls when there wasn't excess, then over the course of 2 months they all suddenly disappeared, getting sealed away by the combined efforts of the Soul King and the 13 Captains and Vice Captains, resting and getting back to full strength between each fight and sealing, and after the 9th got sealed away the only survivors were the Soul King himself and Genryusai Yamamoto, though they were on death's door themselves, even though the had gone in at full strength with every captain and Vice Captain. Then, more than 2000 years later, the battle in Las Noches woke up the 9th, and he was easily able to break the seal due to how old it was, then he released his reiatsu throughout all of Heuco Mundo, awakening his friends and allowing them to break their own seals.
