I looked out the window aimlessly. I wondered about Richard, the owl, and what Rain had said earlier this morning. Certainly, it seemed that there is something happening. Not to mention that they are convinced that I will be caught up in the crossfire. While I was preoccupied with my thoughts, Alectos pulled up around a corner.
"Shade?" Alectos took my hand and pulled me back to reality. I looked at him and a wave of fear ran through deep into my soul. If I am going to end up hurting him, I might as well stay as far as possible. But I don't think I can do it. After all, I am his mate and my shadow seems to calm down with him around.
"Shade," Alectos said again. He put his hand into his pocket and pulled out what looks like a card case. "This is for you." And he pressed the case into my hands.
"For me?" I asked. The card case was made up of tempered glass with my name etched onto it. A thin chain was attached to the top of the cardholder and at the end of the chain was a clip which I assumed was to secure it to a belt loop. The name 'Shade' was lined with gold and it felt light in my hands. "It is beautiful. But why?"
Alectos rubbed his neck and looked the other way.
"Remember the card you got yesterday?" He said, referring to the depiction of a knight card. "I thought you might want something that to keep it safe in. Thankfully I had gotten this card case a few years ago and brought it to a store to get our name carved into it."
I smiled. This was probably the sweetest gesture I have received in my entire life. I took the card out from one of my pockets on the coat and slipped it into the cardholder, closing it with a small click! The card sat beautifully inside the case as if the case was made specifically for it and, just for a second, it seemed to glow a bit before fading away just as quickly for me to think that I was just imagining it. I slipped the case neatly in my pocket before attaching the clip to the belt loop of the coat.
"Thank you," I said, glad to have him by my side. Alectos smiled and I knew that no matter what happened, I would be alright as long as he was at my side. But the joy didn't last long. My phone rang. I looked at the caller ID, Hector. I pressed the green button and Hector's voice screamed through the tiny speaker.
"Come to the Packhouse!" He shouted. "The Witch is after you!"
Alectos growled suddenly. I turned to look at him and saw a fist flying in my direction. My phone dropped from my hand as it went past my head and smashed the glass into tiny pieces before connecting with a hooded figure. The black-hooded figure screamed in pain. The voice was high-pitched like a female. My shadow felt something a few meters down the road. Killing intent. It moved like a snake heading towards its prey and I watched in horror.
"Look out!" I shouted, trying my hardest to will the shadow back in but I was too late. The shadow had reached. Black spikes shot up from the ground, mercilessly impaling themselves into a man. He screamed. Clang! All the onlookers screamed in horror. A rifle slipped from the man's grasp and hit the ground. But he was not the first nor was he the last. More hooded figures started to stream out from various places, with knives, guns, and many other weapons. The alleys, the trees, the vehicles. My shadow was like a berserker, countless spikes shot up from the ground, piercing through the black hooded figures. Alectos covered my back. With extended claws and a fierce growl, he ripped through the assailants with ease.
But not all the attackers were real.
"Damn it! Illusions!" Alectos shouted just as a few of them slipped through the shadow's black spikes, dashing fiercely towards me. "Shade. SHADE!"
But I wasn't listening anymore. I was trembling on the ground, hands gripping my head. My breathing was labored, and I couldn't see anything in front of me. Countless images of death, blood, and dead bodies flashed in front of me, just like in my memories. It was my fault. It was my fault that someone died again
Murderer, the wind whispered repeatedly into my ear. I shook my head, desperate to get the voices out.
Alectos of frantic. He was about to run back to my side when red hooded figures gathered around him and let out a Scream. The scream was inhuman. Different pitches at different decibels. It was a technique used by the Banshees to confuse and incapacitate their prey. Alectos, being a primal werewolf, was the most susceptible to these kinds of attacks. Alectos slammed his hand over his ear but, it was too late. He had already heard the Scream. He fell over unconscious.
As quickly as things happened. It was all over in a few minutes. King Gretel's investigator, Hart, who arrived at the scene too late to salvage the situation, recounted what had happened to Rain and Blaze. After Alectos, who had been hospitalized for damaged eardrums, was rendered unconscious, the Banshees immediately fled. Their job of preventing anyone from saving Shade was done. Just when Hart arrived at the scene, the black hooded figure had picked up Shade and disappeared with a black mist.
Shadow Movement. A skill that belonged only to a certain lineage that excelled in Dark Magic. Illusions are also made from Dark spells. With the number of illusions and even Banshees present at the scene, there was no need for guessing. The Witch was it.
When Gretel arrived at the Moon Drip Pack, the solemn atmosphere made him dread the meeting. Alectos- who had recovered and was discharged several days later, Rain, Blaze, Hector, Jan, and Hart were already waiting in the meeting room. Gretel had seen Alectos before, during his Alpha ceremony. But he looked nothing like he was before. You can tell the look of distraught in his eyes and he was disheveled. It is an important meeting, but you can tell that in his mind, it means nothing to him. Blaze and Rain were impatiently tapping their arm and foot respectively. They too, want to get going to saving their son. Although Blaze also wants to clock the Witch. Jan and Hector sat as calm as possible while Hart was standing up, all ready to receive his King.
Gretel took a seat, unbothered by the disrespectful members. And thus, the meeting started.
