Chapter 8: Captain

Your stomach dropped, feeling immediately anxious hearing Eren's name come out of Levi's mouth. You panicked inside. "What the hell was just about to happen??? Am I just imagining things?? Why do I feel like I'm going to puke?? I'm not committed to anyone...why do I feel this way?", you thought to yourself frantically. "Eren—stop. Find coverage for your shift tonight, or your fired. Simple as that.", Levi said as he hung up the phone angrily. You looked at him waiting for him to say something. "Some of my employees are idiots", Levi cleared his throat, "Anyway, good job on getting that gum off. The floor in here looks much better." You smiled. "...Thanks for your help too, Levi.", you said. Levi didn't respond, but stood up and went back behind the bar while you finished the rest of the dance floor. You finally made it to the edge of the floor, where you declared your victory of cleaning the entire area. You stood, smiling while admiring your work. You checked the time. 12 p.m. "Shit, time flew by.", you thought to yourself as your stomach growled. Levi must have heard it from the bar because he said shortly after, "We've made excellent progress. I didn't see you bring a lunch in today, were you planning on grabbing something from a cafe nearby?" You didn't have much money at all, but you didn't want to admit that to Levi. You softly smiled as you said, "Oh no, I had a big breakfast at home. I won't need to eat again until dinner." Levi frowned. "No", he said. "—Huh?", you asked confused. "I don't play with that bullshit. You have to eat. We will go to the cafe around the corner. Now go wash your hands and we can head that way", Levi said in a commanding tone, ushering you to the bathroom. You started to argue but the look on his face told you to shut the fuck up and listen to the man. You did as he asked. You both began to head to the door when you remembered you left your cell phone on your desk. "Oh, one second Levi. Sorry. I forgot my phone. Let me grab it, real quick!", you said as you briskly walked to the office to grab your phone. As you picked it up you noticed a couple messages. You opened your phone as you walked back towards Levi. Two Unread Messages from Eren.

Eren: Hey

Eren: Got any plans for tonight?

Excitement floods through you at the realization that Eren had been thinking of you while you were away. You smiled and text back.

                                                                  You: I have no plans after I get done working, you have something in mind?

You hit send and then hurry out the office door to meet Levi at the front. He held the door open for you as you walked through. "Thanks", you said as you smiled. "Don't mention it", he said expressionless. You weren't sure what had changed with Levi. You haven't known the man long, but it was safe to say he hated you immediately before even knowing you. He seems softer than the first night where you accidentally ran into him as you were leaving the bathroom. You both walk in silence down the street to get the cafe you had visited before. This time you grabbed the door before Levi had the chance and gestured for him to walk in before you. He scoffed and rolled his eyes at your efforts. "Well now he's back to himself", you thought to yourself as you sighed, "Maybe Ive just been seeing what I want to see in him, just reading into every little thing too much." You follow Levi into the cafe, as you both were greeted by Sasha once again. Sasha was chewing on food as she welcomed the both of you. "Good afternoon! Just the two of you? Oh! You're the girl who came in here the other day! Did you ever find a job?", Sasha asked with food still in her mouth. You smiled. "It's nice you remembered me! Yes! Actually this is my boss, we are grabbing lunch", you replied back to her. Sasha looked at Levi and then back at you. "I had no idea that it was Captain that was hiring! Small world! Well, I'm glad it worked out! Hope you don't become miserable and leave!", Sasha rambled quickly. Levi winced. "Watching you talk with your mouth full is disgusting. Can you seat us already Sasha?", Levi coldly asked. "Captain?", you asked Levi. "I'll explain at the table. If we ever get sat down by potato girl here", he said angrily. Sasha finished her bite and grabbed two menus and silverware. "Sorry Captain....Right this way", she embarrassingly said as she led the two of you to a booth by a window. Sasha handed you both menus. Levi handed it back to her. "I'll have my usual Sasha. And then whatever y/n would like", he said while looking at Sasha. You looked over the menu, feeling uncomfortable with the prices of the food. "I'll just have a water, and the avocado toast with some bacon please", you lightly smiled as you handed Sasha the menu back. Levi's eyes lowered, looking at you in a questionable way. "Bring us a couple stacks of pancakes too. Thanks", Levi said, almost trying to shoo her away. Levi looked back at you and said, "Did you only order that because it's the cheapest item on the menu?" You shifted your eye contact and didn't even get the chance to speak before Levi started again. "That's what I thought. I told you food is on me. There's no strings attached, I just don't want any of my employees skipping meals. It's not healthy." You smiled half heartedly. "I really appreciate lunch. I also am very thankful you have given me this opportunity to be your assistant", you said sincerely. It had been a while since you've had a real job, not just babysitting. Levi remained quiet as he stared off into the distance outside the window, but you could tell he was listening to you. Sasha brought you your water, and Levi a cup of tea that seemed so thoroughly steeped it almost resembled black coffee. "Food will be out shortly! We are short staffed today so I'll make sure you're taken care of!", Sasha exclaimed as she sat your drinks down and then ran to another table. "Hopefully our plates arrive with all of our food on them", you joked, hoping to get a crack out of Levi's cold demeanor. You saw a small curl of his lip, but nothing more. "Playing hard ball huh? I'll get you to crack one day Levi Ackerman", you thought to yourself. "So...what's all this about Captain?", you asked Levi.
