(A/N) Uhhh... Hi guys, long time no see...? I want to apologise for leaving you all hanging. I have no excuse, and the truth doesn't seem any better either. Truthfully? I was supposed to have a clear timetable all summer, and I was only made aware of last minute plans at the... well, last minute. Aka I've been journeying all over the place. My only plan in place was to write everyday so that I could get one book submitted for the Wattys this year. I'm sorry I gave you false hope. I had no right to do that.

(Y/N)'s P.O.V.
People really aren't kidding when they say that you could hear a pin drop in the silence, especially in the one that followed mystery boy's question. It felt like the calm in the eye of the storm. Fitting, seeing as I expected everyone to suddenly pounce and tear me apart. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating a little, but I could not envision what was to follow on from either the question, or my response.
Just silence.
Truth be told, I wasn't really sure how to respond either. What was I to say? Hi, I'm (Y/N), but y'all already knew that, so, um, hi again? Sorry for making you all get punished, by the way, my bad. Can we all start over? Yeah, no. Definitely not. I didn't want to lie though, that's for sure, but I wasn't sure how to explain the truth in full either. And it's not like I have all of my memories back yet (but the bulk of them, yeah).
"(Y/N)?" Asks the boy again, a little more wary this time.
"Um... Yes? Yeah. I mean, hi?" I mumble, immediately wanting to facepalm myself. What was that?! "No, wait, I meant that yes, I'm (Y/N), and I am sorry that all of you had to be punished in such a way because of me. I see now that it was a reckless plan, and I shouldn't have dragged all of you down with me. It was my mistake, and my responsibility only, so you have all been punished on my behalf. I feel so guilty, but that won't make up for what you guys have been these past-" I'm silenced by a small, awkward cough. I glance up, finding most of the cafeteria staring at me, some confused, others with a reassuring smile. I gulp silently, then brace myself.
"Um... (Y/N), it's just really weird seeing you here again." The boy next to me turns red from embarrassment. "Not-not that we're not glad - we really are - but everything's changed so much. And please don't blame yourself for something we all took part in voluntarily."
"Not all of-" One guy at the back gets shushed by almost everyone around me.
"As I was saying, it's nice seeing you again. We honestly... well, we thought after you were taken that we'd never see you again. We thought they'd... kill you." His voice softens around that word, and the whole cafeteria holds its breath.
"Huh... Why would I not come back?" Okay, stupid question, considering I myself a few days ago thought I'd never get out of the Maze. I might have believed in the concept once, but my hope withered down within days. False hope, it seems.
"Well..." He turns away, and the atmosphere in the cafeteria immediately shifts. Awkwardness hangs in the air. "We've been, well, we've been working on some things these past few months. As our punishment. They were going to be sent into the Mazes. We thought that you'd be killed by one. Ever since they closed off the surveillance room to us, we haven't been able to check on how they were behaving. Actually... we're still modifying them at the moment, in addition to all of our lessons and training."
It takes me a moment to understand what he's implying. That... thing?! These guys around me built it?! And apparently there are more?! "Oh no. You guys..." I trail off. I don't know what to say in such a situation. I open my mouth anyway. "I am so sorry. If only I hadn't decided to risk everything for a stupid, non-existent chance at getting-"
