"You know, I'm convinced that they make us do the mile just so they can watch us suffer." Mick complains as we run around the track for p.e.

"Agreed. It's not like I'm getting a job where I have to run every Monday within a certain time." Emi replies breathlessly. I just laugh as we pass the teachers.

"Pick up the pace ladies! No chit-chatting!" One of the coaches hollers after us. We all exchange glances and roll our eyes. We have been going the same pace since we started running 3 laps ago.

After we finish our last lap we all three go to the bathroom and to get water.

"Hey, have either of you heard from Kate?" Mick asks after gulping down some water.

"No, I haven't." Emi responds with a shake of her head. I shrug  because I have my water bottle up to my mouth.

"Last I heard she was getting really busy with work." I said after finishing my water. Mick nodded and Emi just kept drinking. The bell rings for the day so we head to the locker room to change, then just decide to hang around school since none of us have work today.

We decided to play a little game of 'steal a trophy.' in which you take one of the school's trophies from its case and hide it in a completely different part of the school. Fun but risky if there are still teachers on campus, but oh so worth it.

"We should definitely take the baseball one," Emi decides as we look over all of the trophies in the glass cabinet. The school does pride itself on baseball but the trophy isn't that noticeable. I shake my head.

"Mmm, no, too easy," I said, looking at the small, easy to miss trophy. I point to the bigger basketball trophy on the side. "That one."

"Good enough for me," Mick shrugs as we laugh. She opens up the cabinet, Emi quickly grabs the trophy and hands it to me. I stuff it in my bag while Mick closes the cabinet door. Footsteps begin to echo down the hallway. The 3 of us look at each other and take off running.

"Bet you're glad we have to run for p.e. now," I stated, laughing. The girls laughed and we kept running until we made it to the pool on the other side of the campus.

"We should hide it there," Mick points to the high dive above us as we catch our breath. Emi and I nod from agreement.

I unzip my backpack, taking the trophy out and holding it out.

"I'm not climbing up there," Mick says with a shake of her head.

"It was your idea," I say back. She shakes her head again so I turn to Emi, holding it out for her.

"I took it out of the case," she throws her hands up.

"Bitch I carried it here," I deadpan.

"Therefore you should do the honors of placing it up there." She points with a smile. This is what I get for having two friends that are afraid of heights.

"I hate both of you," I mutter, walking towards the spiral staircase leading to the high dive.

"No you don't." Emi shouts. I roll my eyes as I begin walking up the stairs. When I got to the top and looked down Emi was recording. "Smile!" she shouted.

I flipped her off then kneeled to begin crawling out onto the diving board. It wobbled and bent with every movement. Once I reached the end I carefully placed the trophy at the edge and backed away.

"That looked like fun." Mick smiled.

"Yeah, so much fun." I said sarcastically.

"I sent that video to Greyson," Emi grins widely, showing me the video. I chuckled quietly, shaking my head. My phone began ringing, I blindly answered while we walked back to our cars.

"Hello?" I said.

"Vanessa, this is Brady from the hospital," his voice rang out. "Your mom has woken up." Without responding I hung up the phone and began running to my car.

"Where are you going?" Emi exclaimed.

"I have to go! Love you!" I yelled back, not breaking stride.

When I made it to my car I wasted no time starting the engine and tearing out of the parking lot. I definitely broke a few laws but I made it to the hospital in one piece. I ran through the halls until I made it to my mom's room and threw open the door.

"Vanessa?" A broken, dry voice called from the bed. I rushed over, sitting in the waiting chair by my mom's bed and grabbed her hand.

"I'm here mama," I willed my voice not to crack, I could feel my eyes tearing up.

"Where's your brother?" she asked, glancing around the room. When she didn't see him she turned back to me, probably seeing the look on my face.

"Mama, he didn't make it." I muttered. She gasps, clasping a hand over her mouth. "You've been in a coma for 4 months."

She looks at me in shock, shaking her head. A knock on the door sounded and I turned towards it.

"Come in," I muttered. Greyson appeared in the door, quickly but carefully making his way over. He placed a hand on my shoulder, his tense body relaxing slightly.

"I just wanted to make sure you were ok, Em called, sounding worried." He said through a quick breath. I smiled up at him then looked back at my mom who was looking at us with a raised eyebrow.

"Mom, this is my boyfriend Greyson," I said confidently. She looks him up and down then just looks back at me.

"When can I leave the hospital?" Her demeanor completely changed from confused and grieving, to her cold demeanor.

"Doctor needs to check how you are, then he can decide." I muttered, standing from the chair and walking to the door where Greyson was waiting. The doctor walked in just as I came out, the male nurse from before, Brady, right next to him.

"Are you ok Amore?" Greyson asked, wrapping his arms around my waist. I nodded.

"She is just.... Difficult," I sighed, laying my head on his chest.

The doctor told us she could be taken home today. I called my dad but he's stuck in Philadelphia for another week.

Mom didn't even acknowledge Greyson when we wheeled her out of the hospital. All she said was "I don't like those tattoos. Tattoos mean trouble." When she thought he wasn't paying attention.

I know he heard her because a little devilish smirk appeared on his lips.

Well she isn't necessarily wrong about the trouble part, considering his... line of work.

She doesn't know that though and shouldn't judge him.

Apologies for the delay on chapter releases. I just started school this past week so things have been busy.

Next chapter is on the way! xoxo
