Amenis POV
No one messes with the Peros.
I know from experience.
This is why I sit very still while Joshua says that the law my brother asked to enforce has not passed. I only sit there with my fingers twitching as he says the words. And he says them with a smile.
He doesn't realize what he's done.
My eyes look over to the new Lightbook Secretary. Rose, Rose Whitlow. They don't understand why we need this. Or else something could happen to any of them. Just like our parents.
"Amenis," Zachariah says at my shoulder. "The meeting is over. We're going."
I put a smile on my face through gritted teeth as I nod to all the Councillors on my way out. The Peros may have lost the battle, but we won't lose the war.
When we exit the building, our car is waiting outside, chauffeur ready. "Get us out of here." My brother mumbles incoherently, but the driver here's what he says and slams the pedal as we speed out of Councillor hall in a cloud of steam.
I let my smile break and I sit motionless.
Zachariah however lets a scowl envelope his features. "She's odd, that one. Joshua was telling me about how the Lightbooks didn't approve of her mother's marriage choice. It ended the friendship between them, but Rose has proven intelligence. They are giving her a second chance."
I look at him and bite my lip. "You don't think she'll get in the way of my marriage to Joshua, will she?"
My brother chuckles. "Of course she will. You saw them. They're fond of each other, whether they know it or not. But we will do what we always do."
Chills run through my chest. "I don't want to do that again."
He laughs with a bitter edge. "I wasn't asking, dear sister." Zachariah flashes a smile at me and I squirm in my seat. "The next meeting, you will do it. Rule with iron."
"Rule with iron," I mutter.
Sorry, this is such a short chapter! I just wanted to upload a chapter with Amenis, but I didn't want to give too much away. I will upload more chapters today and I promise they will be much longer than this one! Also, we're at 90 votes!!! Help me out on please vote on this chapter!!
