I couldn't move knowing that my life was quite literally in the hands of the Captain.

Very aggressively, he shoved his gun into my hands, making me almost drop the things I already was holding.

"We can hear you, quit stalling already!' Called another bold voice from outside.

My heart raced, my quick breathing synchronizing with the Captain's.

"Hey, hey! Everything is going to be alright, I'll be damned if these assholes get the pleasure of demolishing us." He grabbed my chin. "Listen, we are going to rush these guys. We don't know how many there are, but I'm assuming they were the ones who survived the blast. They might outnumber us, but we might still have the upper hand."

His hand on my face shifted to mine as Caption helped me get a proper grasp of the gun, our fingers briefly intertwining.

"I'll run, make sure to shoot anything that moves. With that ridiculous armor, they made it easy to know where to hit em."

I nodded, and with that he draped me over his shoulder.

Once in a running position, the Captain exhaled loudly, closing his eyes for a moment before opening them with determination as he bolted out of the door.

Only one way out, and he showed no sight of stopping, even when I saw the rifles pointed directly at us.

There were 4 of them, I couldn't get a good look at the holders, but I know for a fact one of them was someone I knew. The rest must have been some other randos.

One of the guys charged at us, making Captain almost trip, but I shot them square between the eyes.

"Are they following us?" Shouted Caption.

I let out a grunt of affirmation, and he cursed under his breath as he began to run in a zigzag pattern.

I could feel every step he took in a panic, he was going so fast I couldn't even hear his feet hit the ground. All I heard was the scraping of his armor, and triggers being pulled.

Despite the way he was running, I was able to shoot one more guy down.

No sign of the other 2.

I began to lower my gun. I felt my nose become stuffy when I had just begun to process what had just gone down. I sure hope the rest of the guys are okay. Did I accidentally take one of them down? Maybe they were right, I was overreacting. I mean, they just wanted to look out for me, right?

I could feel the tears start to pool at the bottom of my goggles.

After what felt like hours of running, Captain finally stopped. He was gasping for air as he took a knee, put me on the ground gently.

My body loosened as I sat up, fidgeting with the dvd the whole time.

Very loud coughing caused me to turn my attention to the Captain. Now his arms were on the ground, head lowered as he his shoulders twitching, looking like a cat regurgitating a hairball. He looked awful with clumps of his hair now sticking out of his helmet and onto his slightly wet face. The smudges of dirt mixed with his sweat as his eyes were red.

"I was totally worth it.", was what he managed to say in between busting his lungs. Once his cough died down a bit, off came his gloves as he started to rub aching arms, letting out a sigh of relief. "Gah, I don't remember you being so heavy." He began to move his arm in a circle and slid his foot across the ground, pointing it at a slightly distant man.

"Good we crushed that private. Boy, did he make a weirdly conveniently good landmark?" He spent in their direction.

I felt uncomfortable with myself being away from anything familiar. Just a day ago I wanted to escape this disastrous dessert, but now I just wanted to go "home".

Suddenly a wave of shame washed over me, I could almost feel Captain's disappointed stare burning into the back of my head.

I needed to leave, now.

Using what little energy I had recovered, I made an attempt to stand up. I wobbled quite a bit, my hands moved in front of me to catch myself, but Cap rushed over to me, once again propping me up.

"Those guys really didn't leave a leg for you to stand on huh Steve?" In a teasing way he bonked his head with mine.

"Actually, I still have both of them, even my secret third one, Cap!"

Silence.

Captain sharply turned to me and grabbed my face. I fell to my knees.

"You mind repeating that for me Steve?"

His hands compressed my cheeks, I began to hyperventilate. Slowly, out of his line of sight, I tried to reload my gun when I heard footsteps.

They were oddly light, and me and Caption jerked our heads.

Out of a cloud of dust, a soldier emerged. They had the same uniform as the Captain, rounded goggles, and a busted helmet that similarly looked like mine. Their glock was pointed right at me and they came forward.

"S-steve? But i thought?" He let go of my face.

"Really sir? After all the time we've spent together you managed to mistake me for someone else?" He shifted his gun between us in a disapproving manner, all the while shaking his hard.

"How did you survive for the past couple of hours then?" Captain's stance changed to one of disbelief as his mouth stayed open slightly out of shock.

"I was knocked out, but got woken up by a chum for brains that mistook me for one of their own. They let me into the attack in front of the vault, where we- I presumably heard you talking to yourself. I didn't know you were touching tips with some stranger."

"So you helped eliminate some of the guys fired as us?"

"Sure did, I destroyed them from the inside as best I could. You ran away awfully fast, I thought I would never catch up."

"Then what the hell did you do?" His face morphed into an expression of pure hatred, putting a lot of energy into facing me. His hand instinctively went to his waist, doing the motion of a draw. While he looked back when he didn't pull anything, I scrambled to firmly grasp the trigger on mine. I made sure to hold the dvd, who knows how much this is worth if these guys went through so much effort just to obtain it.

The deep growl he let through his teeth made me start backing up, unknowingly meeting the dead "landmark" body. But I didn't dare to look back at it.

"Steve, you have to shoot this guy for me, I accidently gave this bastard my gun! If i would have stood with him longer he could have cut off my gun!"

Following his commander's orders, taking aim. I closed my eyes as tears leaked out of me. Terrified, my hand grew shaky and sweaty.

I knew I couldn't make a clean shot.

It was over.

I whimpered.

Steve's finger finally pulled back the trigger, a gunshot was heard, but it from him. His hand went back and released, letting his glock crash to the ground. He wrapped his hand around his wrist in agony, curling up on the ground as he let out short, yet earpechiing, yelps of pain.

Captain immediately jumped to aid him, putting his hands over Steve's, but he stopped to look behind me.

I also looked back to see an condescending arm.

"Back off our turf or I'll blow your brains out."
