Chapter 6

Katie's POV
March 16, 2010

"Today's her car seat test." I say and Damien smiles as he pulls a shirt on.

We get to the hospital, and see that Kenzie has a roomie.

"Hi, we're Kenzie's parents." Damien says and the woman smiles as she shakes our hands.

"I'm Abby. My husband, Grey, went to get the nurse so we can hold our son, Tommy." She says and I smile at their son who is tinier than Makenzi was.

"Alright, let's get the car seat test done!" The nurse for us says and I smile as we take Kenzie and set her in the car seat and she passes with flying colors.

We take her home and she settles down to sleep in her crib while Damien heads to work.

About six hours pass and I get a call from Damien's cell.

"Hey baby. Kenzie's awake and-" I'm cut off by his boss.

"Hey Katie! Listen you need to get to Vancouver General now! Damien had a major accident here in the factory. Him and six others fell from their workstation!" He says and I get Kenzie ready as fast as possible and fly to the hospital. I dial Ryan and tell him to get to the hospital.

"I'm Kathryn Adair, my boyfriend, Damien Peake, was brought in from a work accident!" I say and the nurse tells me that he is in surgery.

Ryan, Trisha, and Lucy all show up and we are forced to wait, Kenzie needing a bottle sometime in the several hours.

Finally a doctor comes out and walks to us.

"I'm very sorry, but Damien didn't survive. When he got here he was touch and go, and we had to get him into surgery as soon as he arrived, but he lost too much blood. I'm very sorry." He says and I begin to cry as Ryan pulls me into a hug.

We have his funeral, with a closed casket, as the fall damaged his face too much for people to see it. After the funeral, I give Ryan the key to the apartment back.

"Katie, honey, I don't mind you and Kenzie living in the apartment." He says and I look at him with red bloodshot eyes as I hold Kenzie.

"I can't be there without Damien. Every time I walk in the apartment I smell his scent, hear his voice, and feel him. I can't be alone there." I say and he nods as he hugs me and looks down at Kenzie.

Trisha and Lucy left about a week before the funeral. She hasn't even called us. I take Kenzie to the car and head back to dad's house.

Two years later
Katie's POV

"Mama!" Kenzie yells as Chad comes downstairs with her and I smile as I take my baby girl.

"Hey baby, guess what today is?" I ask her and she smiles.

"Party day!" She cheers and I laugh as I set her down.

About a year ago, once I turned 18, I moved in with Chad as Bethany was being mean to Kenzie.

Dad was upset because he didn't believe that Bethany was being mean to Kenzie and that I was spoiling her.

Chad asked me to be with him about a month ago, back around Christmas, and I said yes.

Ryan doesn't come around much since he and Trisha divorced in May of 2010. Lucy went to live with Trisha and her new boyfriend, Freddie, in California. He knows that Kenzie has no memory of Damien and it hurts him when she calls Chad 'Dada'. I attempted to explain that we will tell her once she's older that Damien is her father but due to infantile amnesia, she wouldn't remember who Damien was in four years.
