Chapter 9

Three months later, July 27th, 2012

Katie's POV

"Damn it!" I hiss as the water in the pot for the Mac and cheese over boils and burns my hand.

Kenzie is in the living room playing with her dolls as I try to get  dinner done.

After I finally get the food done, I get a phone call from Dad's place.

"Sissy?" I hear Pat ask and I stand up.

"Hey Pat. What's going on?" I ask him and he starts sobbing.

"Mommy left us and sissy is sick. She hasn't been able to eat." He says and I tell him to hang on as I grab Kenzie and the car keys before rushing to the car.

I strap Kenzie in her seat before driving to Dad's place.

I get out, seeing Patrick and Addisyn rushing to me and I see that Addy obviously has a fever from hell and get them both in the back seat beside Kenzie.

I drive to Vancouver General and quickly get all of us out and rush Addy into the hospital, knowing that she may have Celiac like Dad does and ate something with Gluten.

They get her back into the ER and I sit with her, letting Kenzie play on her Leapfrog tablet and Patrick is watching Netflix on my cell.

I called Dad and told him, but he said that he can't just come home.

About forty minutes later the doctor comes in.

"Alright, so I've run some tests and they're all pointing to acute appendicitis. Her white blood cell count is up and her red blood cell count is down. She can only drink citrus flavored things at this point. Her body is overheating itself trying to fight the infection off.  We have to take her back for both an MRI and a CT scan now to see if her Appendix has burst yet or not but either way we will be doing an emergency surgery." He says and I sigh as I nod.

"Alright." I say as I take my cell from Pat and dial Dad's number while they take Addy back to the MRI and CT scans.

"Hello?" He asks and I sigh.

"They're doing an MRI and CT on Addy. The blood work is showing appendicitis and they want to see if it's burst or not, but either way they'll be operating today." I tell Dad and he sighs.

"Alright, I'm coming back home. Chief is giving all of us a week off since it's the dead of summer anyways to spend with our families. Try to call Beth again and I'll get on the first flight from Houston to Vancouver today." Dad says and I tell him okay as I dial Bethany.

"Hello? Where are my kids?" She asks and I sigh.

"We're at Vancouver General. Pat called me because Addy was sick. Addy is getting ready for an emergency surgery. Her Appendix is either infected or has burst." I tell her and she sighs as she says she will be here soon.

Soon, Pat, Kenzie and I are all in the Private family waiting room as of who Chad and my dad are waiting for word on Addy. Her Appendix has burst and they rushed her from the CT scan to surgery three hours ago. I told Dad via text and he said he was getting off the plane now. That was an hour ago, but with Vancouver traffic it's horrible.

"Katie!" Chad says and I rush to him and he hugs me tightly as Kenzie sleeps on the chair.

"Where's my Dad?" I ask and he sighs.

"He went to his place to get Bethany since she's so far into her pregnancy with Grayson." He says and I scoff as the doctor walks in.

"Miss. Adair?" He asks and I rush to him.

"Yes? Is she alright?" I ask and he smiles as he nods.

"You are very lucky we operated when we did. Now, she's on oxygen due to how long we had her under. She'll need to be on it for a few days while she's in here. Also, she won't be allowed any hard foods or soda for a week or two. Is your Dad coming?" He asks and I nod.

"Well, Addisyn is in ICU 6 for the night just to be sure that her stitches don't come undone. She won't be allowed much to eat if she is hungry. Also, they won't be allowed in ICU." He says and I nod as Chad waves me to go to my little sister.

I walk in and she is pale and I see a bag of O+ blood going into her arm.

"While in surgery, I accidentally nicked a blood vessel trying to remove the tissue of the appendix. we gave her O+ as we have no A+ in the blood bank here. We would have to call Canadian Red Cross to get it. She'll be fine but she'll be a little weak for a few days." He says and I nod as he leaves and I sit beside my 5 year old sister.

Soon Dad and Beth arrive, Bethany heavily pregnant and almost due. Doubt it's a biological sibling of mine, but I'll let Dad figure that out himself.

I stand to leave and Dad follows me out while Bethany stays with Addy.

"Do you care to watch Pat while Addy is in here?" He asks and I nod.

"I don't mind Dad, but she left them alone. Her car wasn't anywhere in the drive when I pulled in to get them." I say and he sighs.

"She said she went to the store and that Becky was watching them. I guess Becky left after she did and Pat got scared. Thank you for getting them though." Dad says and I sigh as I roll my eyes, my own baby fluttering in my belly.

"Dad, if she just went to Foodland or even Dollar General, she would have picked up her phone the twelve times I called once Addy got admitted here eight hours ago. I'll watch Pat until Addy gets out of the hospital but I won't be able to watch him for a long period of time. I have a two year old and another little girl on the way. I can't be this stressed out, or I'll go into early labor like I did with Kenzie." I say and he nods.

I walk back out and Chad has Kenzie in his arms and Patrick grabs my hand as we walk out to the car.

At the house, I put Kenzie in her room and Chad puts Pat in his and Addy's for when they're here.

I see him come back out and he pulls me into a hug.

"I attempted to talk with him about getting DNA testing done on Addy and Pat and the new baby. I told him about what he told me in 2000 before me and you met and he just didn't listen I guess. So, what's the baby going to be?" He asks and I smile as I open the nursery door and he sees the name Lyric on the wall where we are putting the crib and butterfly decals on either side.

"I can't wait." He whispers as he places his hands on my belly as he kisses me gently.
