Chapter 22

Six months later
Katie's POV

"Kenzie! Behave!" I say firmly to my daughter as we shop in the store, me constantly checking on Jessie.

Turns out, Jessie and Robbie both have the heart issue, with Jessie having it worse.

No, she didn't have open heart surgery, but she has to be on a heart monitor for the rest of her life due to Tachycardia.

"But Mommy I want it!" Kenzie says as she holds up a baby doll and I sigh as I try to hold it together.

I was recently diagnosed with Postpartum Depression, PPD for short, and it's taking a toll on me. I don't regret Jessie but she wasn't planned at all like the others were.

"Makenzi Miranda, I said no and I mean no. Now, if you don't behave, you're going in the buggy!" I say and she throws herself onto the floor of the Walmart and begins to throw this God awful tantrum.

I pick her up and put her into the buggy and continue the shopping trip before going out to the minivan.

I load up all the kids before getting the grocery's put away into the coolers.

I give Kenzie, Lyric, Robbie, Eliza and James, (Tyler and Rae went with Chad to the studio) a snack and get into the driver's seat before heading home.

After we get home, all the kids disperse into their own areas and I start on dinner. I see Kenzie doing something then hear a scream and walk in to see Kenzie trying to punch Eliza and Lyric in the face and grab her as she goes after Jessie.

I lock her in place as she screams to be let go and feel the tears as James jumps to get the house phone to call Chad.

Soon, Chad is running inside, ushering the kids upstairs as he helps me with Kenzie.

"Let me go!" She screams again and I let her go, my heart snapping in two.

"Makenzi Miranda! What is your problem today?" Chad asks and she rolls her eyes at him.

"Them! They ruined my life!" She screams and I feel like shit as I get up and walk over to her.

"They are your siblings, young lady. You do not hit your siblings. I only wish when I was your age I had siblings to play with." I say and she runs upstairs to her room and then we realize that she shares a room with Rae, Lyric, and Eliza.

We decide to take Kenzie to the ER and there they recommend a 30 day inpatient stay at the hospital for psychiatric treatment.

Since Chad is her stepfather, he isn't allowed a say, but I still discuss it with him.

We both agree that it's the best thing for her and I sign the papers releasing her into their care.

We head back home and I collapse on the couch in tears as this is the hardest thing I have ever done.

Sometime later, Ryan shows up and he looks around for Kenzie.

"Where's Kenzie at?" He asks and I look down.

"Ryan, there is something wrong with her. We admitted her into a psych facility for 30 days for evaluation. She tried to punch Lyric and Eliza, before going after Rae and Jessie. Did Damien have any issues like this?" I ask him and he looks away.

"Damien was diagnosed at the age of three with Bipolar Psychosis, a very rare form of Bipolar Disorder. It causes things like what happened with Kenzie to happen. When Trisha had Lucy, Damien was four and  attempted to kill her three times. Once by trying to bathe her with Trisha, but with hot water. The second time was when the babysitter was cooking and he tried to put her in the oven. The third and final time was when he tried to smother her. That's when we took him to the hospital and had to admit him for 30 days to get him medicated so he would be safe enough to be around his sister. I think it's possible that Kenzie may have inherited it from Damien." Ryan says and I drop down to the floor in shock as Damien never told me any of this.

"He-He never told me this." I say quietly as Chad tries to help me up and Ryan nods.

"Once he was medicated and was regulated on them, he stopped it all.  I don't think he remembered much of it as he was three and four years old. You guys didn't meet until he was 12." Ryan says and I nod as Chad helps me up.

"Will she be safe to have around the other kids?" Chad asks Ryan and Ryan shrugs.

"Only time will tell. Damien done good after he got out but maybe you should consider moving Kenzie into her own room to ease it back to normal. That may help." He says as he leaves. I look to Chad who sighs as he hugs me.

"We'll get through this." He whispers and I nod as I try not to cry.
