There were few things I was sure of. That we would not leave this island again was one of them. This was our home and we were safe. Everyone who was still alive was here with me and slowly but surely I was on my way to being happy again with what I had. Just like Newt had wanted me to be.
For the first time since I had been sent into the Maze by WICKED, I had put down my weapons. I didn't need them anymore, even though it had taken me some time to accept that. At first, it had felt completely wrong not to feel my gun and knife against my back, tucked into my waistband, but gradually I had gotten used to it. The threat, whether it came from WICKED or Cranks, didn't exist here and I had to learn not to be on constant alert. So I had put away my weapons and stowed them in the box Fry Pan had given me along with the rest of my mementos.
I was also sure that I would never again move more than a few hundred meters away from my friends and especially from Gally, after all we lived on a small patch of the island and slept only meters away from each other. Since we had reached the Safe Haven, he had not left my side and in fact it had made it easier for me to cope with my grief, even though now, five months after Newt's death, I was still not over having lost him.
Day by day, Thomas and I explored each other's minds and our interconnected abilities more and more, and again, I was sure we would never know how this connection had come about.
But we lived in a world where nothing was really certain and I probably should have known I was wrong at the very moment I had thought I knew even one of these things for sure. It was never good to rely on a fact and assume that you knew what the next few years, or even your entire life, would be like.
So it had been almost preordained that everything would turn out differently than I had expected, and that I would be faced with decisions I had never wanted to make. Because that was what happened - unexpected.
