We reached our sleeping places and I rummaged among my things for a fresh sweater. I took the first one that fell into my hands and slipped into it without taking off the gray sweatshirt I had worn during the day. I looked down at myself. The sweater was dark blue and a few sizes too big, and my pants were regular jeans. The shoes Francesca had picked out for me on the ship I was still wearing today.
Now she dropped down in front of me on Gally's bed, under which my clothes were lying, and examined me. Her look told me that she had seen through me again and when she started to speak after Harriet and Sonya had already gone to the fire, my theory was confirmed.
"You've been thinking too much again," she stated.
I looked at her innocently. Maybe it was working.
"What do you mean?"
"You can't fool me, you know that."
Her gaze was piercing.
I sighed. She just knew me way too well. The last few months had shown that we were made to be good friends, and since then we'd spent so much time together that it felt like she only had to look at me to read my mind.
"I've been thinking about him again," I admitted.
"And what's so wrong about that?"
I looked over at the group of teenagers already gathered around the large fire. Gally was standing with Thomas and Minho, and the three of them seemed to be engrossed in conversation. Again I sighed.
"If I have to think about him every time, I won't be able to make Gally happy. Never."
Now Francesca slid to the edge of the bed and took my hands. I was still sitting in a crouched position.
"Hey, this is nothing to be ashamed of or justify, all right? And I'm not just saying that because you're my best friend, but because Gally would tell you the exact same thing. He knows how you feel. It's gonna take time to stop hurting, but it's gonna get better. Someday there will come a day when you can talk about Newt without crying. Someday you'll just be happy to have known him."
Carefully, she wiped a tear from my cheek that had made its way down there.
"I think Gally would wait even longer if you tell him. He'd probably wait a lifetime."
"And that's what's so wrong. I don't deserve this at all," I sniffled.
"Hell, you do. If anyone deserves this, it's you. Look at all you've been through. And you got through it. You deserve someone who wants to make you happy. And you will be happy, I promise you."
I leaned over and hugged her.
"Thank you, Franci. I'm so glad we met."
"Me too." She hugged me tightly. "Now come on. Let's go join the others. We'll have something to eat in a minute."
