"NOOOOOOO!" Kraken roared as Essence was brought to her knees by the raw rage, sadness, and fearfrom Kraken's mind. Kraken bursted out of the office like a hurricane and rushed down the hallway in tears.
Tsunami came out after her to make sure Kraken was okay, but she then saw Essence and growled.
"Why were you eavesdropping!?" Tsunami asked furiously. Essence felt her stomach drop at her teacher's fury. She knew she was not supposed to hear that Queen Coral is dead.
"I- I had to! I had a vision." Essence defended herself. "Kraken is my friend and I need to help her."
Tsunami took a deep breath. " I swear if it's another prophecy..." She shook her head and sighed, calming down. "I'm sorry. Just -- make sure Kraken is ok. Talk to her and keep her calm."
"I'll bring her to my mother. She may be able to help as well." Essence said, rushing off to her room. She knew that Kraken would be in there.
As she entered the room, Essence saw the hunched over mess that Kraken was. Essence's heart cracked. Where was the fearless, headstrong Kraken that she knew? This Kraken was in the middle of a full blown panic attack and her mind was moving at a million miles per hour.
"Kraken are you-"
"I can't go back, I can't leave!" She snapped, not looking up.
"Kraken please calm down, and just try to speak clearly."
"My mother, she is now the queen. She'll force me to come back home to the Sea Kingdom. I can't leave the first real friends I've made! I know that the royal guards are coming and if I don't respond nicely, she'll just use her magic to summon me home!"
"Kraken I'm so-"
"Wait, I have an idea." Kraken perked up from her original hunching position. "Essence, I need you to help me convince Turtle to enchant something to make me immune to my mother's magic."
"Okay, I'll help you. I don't want to see you go either." Essence said. This shouldn't be too hard, she thought. Turtle isn't hard to convince.
Together, they walked to Turtle's classroom, which they knew would be empty as he held his classes in the morning. The hard part would be hoping that Turtle wouldn't be a mess himself. He was very close to Coral.
Pushing the kelp curtain aside, Essence saw Turtle. He did not have his skyfire band on, which allowed her to read his mind. On the outside he looked fine, twiddling his thumbs, but mentally Essence could see that he is barely keeping it together. He must have heard of Coral's death a few days before Kraken.
"Hey, Turtle," Kraken said quietly.
"You've heard, haven't you." Turtle replied blankly, sitting behind his desk staring at the wall.
"Are you ok?" Kraken asked. Essence stood quietly, not knowing what to do.
"I'm taking it the best I can." His voice cracked. Kraken seemed to cringe at the thought of asking him at this time, but she said, "Turtle.. I need to ask for a favor."
"What do you need?" Turtle asked, looking up for the first time.
"I need you to enchant me to be immune from An- my mother's spells."
The blue-green Seawing dropped his papers. "WHAT!?"
"I know mother never really wanted me to come to Jade Mountain and I just know she will use this as an excuse to make me come home."
"But Kraken, she's the queen now. I can't do this. You know it."
"Essence, Scorpion, Tundra, Ace, and Swellow are the first and only real friends I've made. Are you telling me to just abandon them? How could I leave them now? Didn't you have friends, too? Would you like it if I left?" Kraken whipped her head toward Essence, her voice rising. Essence nodded uncomfortably.
