Life can be so difficult sometimes. The smallest thing can cause so much headache. It has been a few days since Meredith rejected Derek, and a lot has happened since then. Meredith had to deal with Susan, her father's new wife, and her half sister, that showed up at the hospital to have her baby. Things didn't go well at first, there were complications, but in the end Addison worked her magic.
However, that was not the only drama that had happened. Addison had had a tough couple of days reliving the situation about the abortion she had. She had talked to Callie about it and after some thinking, she told Meredith as well. In the end, Meredith advised her to talk to Mark and be honest with him, she did, and they finally made peace with what happened. And with time it was as nothing had happened at all, because Mark still flirted shamelessly with her, but she wanted to move on from her past, so she ignored it every time.
Oh, and you would think that was all, but this is Seattle Grace, there is always more. George's dad died, and not long after that he and Callie got married in Vegas. Burke proposed to Cristina. The chief wants to retire, so he is looking for someone to replace him, and now there is a race going on between the senior doctors to get the job.
But the cherry on top of the cake: Elis Grey had a moment of lucidity. But like always things didn't end up well, she is quite sick. Meredith and her also had a fight because Meredith said she was happy with the life she had, that she had everything she could ever ask for, which caused her mother to call her a disappointment and ordinary. But Addison was there to comfort her and remind her that she is anything but ordinary.
''Where is she?'' Meredith asked a nurse, as she entered the ER where Addison was being checked out, after she had risked her life entering a room, where the air was toxic, to help a patient.
''Excuse me?''
''Doctor Montgomery. Where is she?'' Meredith asked, concern evident in her face and voice.
The nurse didn't say anything, just pointed to a bed where Meredith saw a redhead lying with eyes closed.
'' Addie '' Meredith said softly, reaching out to her.
Addison opened her eyes and smiled sweetly at her, whispering behind her oxygen mask a soft hi.
''Are you ok? Doctor Webber told me what happened.'' She asked while sitting on a chair next to the bed.
''I'm ok.'' Addison said quietly.
''You sure?'' Meredith asked, frowning a little.
Addison loved when Meredith did that. She thought it was very cute. Before she realized what she was doing, she was reaching out to touch that frown. ''I'm ok Mer. I promise.'' She said, smiling softly. When she noticed what she was doing, she tried to pull back, only to be stopped by Meredith enveloping Addison's hand with hers and squeezing it.
''You gave me quite the scare... please don't do that again.'' Meredith said, her voice shaking a little.
''I'm sorry.'' Addison whispered.
They were quiet for a bit, until Addison broke the silence. ''Are you ok?'' She asked quietly.
''Yeah. Why wouldn't I be?'' Meredith asked a little confused, and then understood what Addison meant. ''Yeah. I'm ok.''
''It must be hard having her back after so long.'' Addison commented softly.
''Yeah... So long and nothing's changed.'' Meredith huffed.
''What do you mean?'' Addison asked curiously.
''Nothing.''
''Meredith.'' Addison pushed softly.
Meredith didn't say anything, but when she looked at her, Addison could see tears in her eyes.
''Oh Mer... What happened?'' She said, squeezing the hand that was still holding hers.
''She said... I... I told her I was happy and couldn't ask for anything more... She... She said if I was happy with just this, then... I... I was a disappointment to her... That she had raised me to be extraordinary, but I am nothing more than ordinary.'' Meredith said, wiping angrily the tears.
Addison didn't say a word, and that caused Meredith to look at her. Boy, she has never seen Addison look so angry as she did now.
''What?'' Addison asked slowly. Although she wasn't really asking, she did listen, she was only trying to wrap her head around the absurdity of what she had just heard.
''It's fine. I'm used to it.''
''Mer...'' Addison sighed deeply before continuing. ''Please tell me you didn't believe her... Mer you're amazing, you are one of the best interns of this hospital, you are a great friend and a wonderful person. Mer you are a lot of things, but trust me...'' She stopped and looked straight in Meredith's eyes. ''You are not ordinary. You are special in so many ways and to so many people. You are extra-extraordinary Meredith Grey... Don't you dare forget that.''
That moment there, that little speech, is what made Meredith realize. She just wished she would have the chance to tell Addison. Right now, in this freezing water drowning, she prayed to any God, deity or higher being that existed out there to give her this chance, to allow her to stay alive, not for herself, but for Addison, the woman she was madly in love with.
