Messina Reyes enters a building. She is carrying the bag from the restaurant.

4.3. INT. - APARTMENT BUILDING - HALLWAY - MESSINA REYES - NIGHT
Messina walks along the hallway when she is stopped by a man.
CARLOS CANO is in his 50s. He is Messina's landlord. Carlos is deceptive and opportunistic and takes advantage of people.
CARLOS CANO
Seems like you are doing well!
MESSINA REYES
Good afternoon, Mr. Cano!
CARLOS CANO
Are you hiding from me?
MESSINA REYES
No, of course not!
CARLOS CANO
The rent is due!
MESSINA REYES
I will pay at the end of the month!
CARLOS CANO
I heard that before!
MESSINA REYES
I started working as a waitress in a
restaurant now!
CARLOS CANO
You do? You look like a prostitute!
MESSINA REYES
(embarrassed)
No, I am not a prostitute, Mr. Cano!
CARLOS CANO
What have you there?!
MESSINA REYES
That's for Jaime, the boy hadn't had
anything to eat the whole day!
CARLOS CANO
I hear him every time running up

MESSINA REYES

CARLOS CANO

MESSINA REYES

CARLOS CANO
My wife is sick, she needs medication,
I cannot let you live rent-free! Everyone
has to give his share. Let me see what's
in the bag!
MESSINA REYES
(embarrassed)
It's nothing, just some leftovers from the
restaurant!
CARLOS CANO
I haven't eaten in a restaurant in a long
time and I am your landlord!
Messina concedes and lets Carlos open the meal Raul prepared for her.
CARLOS CANO (CONTINUED)
That doesn't look like leftovers!
Don't you know that liars burn in
hell?!
MESSINA REYES
(embarrassed)
A friend made it for me!
CARLOS CANO
You have an admirer! Maybe he can
help you with the rent! You are an
attractive woman!
MESSINA REYES
(hopelessly)
Mr. Cano, please, I will pay you the
rent!
CARLOS CANO
You betta! I have a good and honest
heart, but I need to feed this heart
of mine! This looks delicious, I bet
Mrs. Cano would like to have dinner
with food from a restaurant!
Messina takes some money out of her pocket to gives it to Carlos!
MESSINA REYES
This is all I have!
CARLOS CANO
That's all? You don't get much tips,
as it seems? As a waitress you have
to be friendly and smile, that's what
customers appreciate, the service!
I know a lot of restaurants!
MESSINA REYES
I will bring some more tomorrow!
CARLOS CANO
Keep your money!
Carlos calls after his wife.
CARLOS CANO (CONTINUED)
Blanca! Look what one of our tenants
brought us, food from a restaurant. When
was the last time you ate in a restaurant!
MESSINA REYES
(tearfully)
Mr. Cano, please this food is for Jaime!
CARLOS CANO
(to Messina)
I wanna help you, Mrs. Cano wants to
throw you out of the apartment for
not paying the rent! This will make
her reconsider!
(to Blanca)
Blanca, did you hear?
(to Messina)
Her blood sugar must have dropped!
The poor woman! She hoped for you
to pay the rent, so that she can buy
herself something to eat. A woman
at her age shouldn't suffer! I will hurry
inside and check after her. At the end
of the month or I will give the apartment
to a paying tenant!
Carlos disappears with Messina's bag into his home and leaves Messina desperate.
