RUBY
My phone rang against my nightstand. The buzz vibrating against its wooden surface, pulling me from my half-asleep state.
Sleep has definitely not been on my side tonight.
I rolled over, tapping my hand over the surface of what I suspected to be my nightstand. My hand brushed against the corner of my phone and then I trailed it up the side, encasing it fully into my grasp.
Who the hell is calling me at, I checked the time in the corner of my phone, four in the morning!?
I frowned and didn't even sneak a glance at the caller ID as I pressed the phone to my ear lazily.
Please don't be Agnes, please don't be Agnes, please don't be Agnes. I chanted in my head as I waited for a voice to address me.
I haven't been going to work often. Some days I can't even get out of bed and others I step out the house and walk right back in, telling myself it's just best to stay home cooped up in my room that tends to feel like 100 degrees when I'm ruffled in my covers.
I love the job I was given and I feel like I haven't been appreciating the opportunity I was offered to even work at that library, so I'll try to show up at my job more frequently and at least pretend I enjoy it.
Silence traveled from the other end of the phone. That caused me to speak first.
"Whatwhatwhatwhatwhat." I slurred into the receiver. "If this is a scammer scheming for my information, my social security number is 231-99- fuck you. Good bye." I went to hang up the phone but I stopped once the caller spoke up.
"Ruby it's Aspen." He rushed out before I got the luxury to press the big, red hang up button that was taunting me.
Why is he calling me so late? Did he mistake my number for one of his booty calls?
"Am I dreaming or are you actually calling me at four in the morning? Actually, no- scratch that- I don't dream. Why are you calling?" I rasped, still not soaking up enough of my surroundings to even see a few feet in front of me.
"You don't dream?"
"No."
"Why?"
"I don't know, Aspen. Do you want me to go to the hospital and get a CT scan and send you the results?" I snapped.
"You're too sarcastic."
"You're too inquisitive."
"Says you." What's that supposed to mean?
I ran a hand over the left side of my face then rubbed my eye. "To what do I owe you this lovely phone call so early in the morning?"
"Well I was wondering..." He trailed off, noises bouncing off the speaker of the phone from his end. It sounded like he was moving things.
