❝ do you want me or do you not ❞five months since soda had his lips on nicolette's, five month since he left america, five months since he saw nicolette. he had officially reunited with steve where his buddy kicked his bunk pal out for soda to be his new pal, they immediately reconnected the memories from tulsa with a smile.
though it was hard for them to just sit down and chat because both were being called to different duties, steve had his hands on the planes while soda was in charge of adding ammo to the guns, definitely not the guns he pictured from tulsa; the ones where greasers robbed stores with.
as this was going on, nicolette had started her first month of being a nurse, it hurt her a lot when she had to take care of the injured soldiers who came in with bloody wounds, she would breakdown at the end of the day for those who didn't make it.
nicolette even cared for the little children found by the entrance of the small tents, all were dehydrated and starving from many days out and away from their parents, nicolette tried her best to be a mother figure towards them by feeding and nourishing them
it was one day where steve came in with a bad cut from the screwdriver after mistaking it for a wrench, nicolette had let off a soldier but was shocked after seeing steve's same old buck tooth, she wasn't happy at all to see him, instead was scared that he would go off and tell soda about her endangering her life.
"steve? i can explain." nicolette stuttered.
"does soda know?" was the first thing he asked, she shook her head. "he's out there right now, don't wanna stop him from doing that if i told him about you being here." steve cared too much about hurting soda instead of nicolette getting physically hurt as soda was months away from going home.
"i umm... see you got a bad cut right there." nicolette pointed at the scar.
"uh yeah, ya mind?" steve calmly shook his hand, nicolette got to working. "so tell me, what made you want to serve as a nurse?"
"well it all started..." nicolette trailed off.
flashback
nicolette was taking lily and sarah out for ice cream after hearing the ice cream parlor reopened, lily and sarah were fighting over who could eat the fastest when nicolette stumbled upon a bulletin board with wavers asking for women to volunteer as a nurse.
she yanked the paper off its board where lily kept tugging on nicolette's skirt to get moving, only sarah noticed nicolette's instincts. the chocolate layer of her ice cream melted onto the ground but no complaints.
"you're not thinking of going, are you?" sarah asked with her puppy dog eyes.
"i mean there are a lot of people hurt out there, sarah, i've gotta go." nicolette pointed out.
"if you go, just know you've always been a real hero, still one now." sarah smiled.
"that's sweet, let's get you home, heard your mama's getting off of work early." nicolette assumed, they all nodded before following her to their apartment.
nicolette kept thinking about her randomly reuniting with sodapop, but couldn't stop being so anxious about him all mad about her being close to war, nicolette couldn't care any less, she loved helping people out.
if risking her life meant that she had to save others, then she was in, 18 years was enough for her and that she'd never live to see anymore happiness if she died.
end of flashback
"packed my bag and said goodbye to my mama." nicolette said.
"damn nicolette, you've got a lot of nerve coming here." steve snickered.
"oh did i miss your funny side." she rolled her eyes.
"well i've gotta get back to work." steve hopped off the bed.
"steve?" nicolette called out.
"yeah?"
"promise to not tell soda i'm here?" nicolette pleaded, steve nodded.
nicolette loved soda but she just didn't want him worrying too much about her when he's saving people's lives, it would kill him both ways if he did and that it'd be her fault that another curtis was dead.
pray to god to see if steve was a snitch...
