"Y/N-chan~", the person chanted. With his hands in the pockets of his pants he gave you a closed eye smile.
It was genuine and warm when it all hit you at once. You missed him all too dearly. Hiding is pointless and nothing good would come out of it.

He would never be mad at you, you realized when he took few steps up the stairs, his dark eyes enveloping you in a warmth you missed for so long.

"Hey Manjiro-", in a blink of an eye your bento fell from your hands bouncing a few times against the concrete stairway when he engulfed you in a hug. He was just one step below yours, making both of you similar heights so your head could rest on his shoulder as he held you tight as If you'll just disappear.
He's grown, you noticed. His hair was longer too. You hugged back.

For a few seconds there were no words being exchanged, and the background was pure white noise with students laughing and talking in the distance mixed with occasional bird chirping when flying by.
He exhaled softly, with a slight smile that etched on his face. Letting go and separating from her, he looked at her face again, noticing how she changed over the time.

He always thought of her as pretty even sometimes introducing her as his girlfriend at the playground when they were kids, but it never lasted long since she'd always be there to smack him to his senses.
But now... he wondered If it's even humanly possible for someone to become even more mesmerizing than he remembered.

Shaking his thoughts and memories off, he pinched her cheek resulting in a yelp,
"You always say bye when you're going", he said with a pout.

When he let go, you rubbed the spot with your hand and looked at his expression. What was there more to say?

"I'm sor-", he put his index finger against your lips as to shush you from continuing the sentence.

"Don't apologize", he removed his finger and extended his pinky in front of your face,
"Just promise you won't do it again"

There was a small pause and like a deja-vu it hit you with an old memory you completely forgot.
"I see you're still childish as ever Manjiro", you said, putting your pinky around his nevertheless, "but fine, I promise"

He knew you wouldn't break the promise no matter what, because this kind of an agreement was something you two did regularly when you were kids and you always stayed true to your words. That's just how you were and it made you trustworthy to him and everyone else for that matter.

It didn't take long until you both sat on the stairs to catch up to everything you two missed about each other. Although it can't be all talked out during school lunch time since there's only little time left for another period to start. Of course you couldn't afford to skip school since it's your first day and you weren't up to having problems as a new student.

But... you missed him so much, his childish demeanor, the way he talks nonchalantly and the way he makes certain facial expressions. You missed his smile and you wished you could talk to him like this for hours, but it couldn't go that way, because after a short while of him telling you some funny stories from his gang and about how everyone else is doing, it was almost time for you to get to your class. Not even once has he mentioned his black haired friend and you weren't prepared to even ask about him at all.

"I heard from Mitsuya about your grandma", Manjiro said while you both preparing to separate your ways for today. His eyes boring into you.

You nodded, while looking straightforward.
"There's nothing that could've been done. I loved her, but she was old and in that age where I should've expected it, it's just how it goes I guess"

He analyzed your expression, but it seems that it was something you've been through already, leaving nothing but a sad memory to recall. Your grandma's death didn't come easy on you and all the tears for her were already dried up.
After a while you just felt rather empty than sad.

Manjiro knew the short spaced out look you gave out, he knew how you felt.
"Y/N...", you looked at him again to see a slight encouraging smile on his face, "Let's hang out more, okay?"

It made you smile too, nodding in confirmation you both parted your ways with full hearts.
