Sage POV
Next morning"It's okay Sage." Ash rubbed my back as I cried into Mikos shoulder.
"I swear to God im gonna kill Mekai." Meijai said pacing around the police station.
"His trial isn't until September 3rd." Anita sighed walking back over to us. It was July 30th.
"That's an entire month away, how am I supposed to tell the kids there father is at work for a fucking month?" I sighed wiping my eyes.
"You're gonna have to tell them at some point, especially if he does get a longer sentence now." Miko said and I nodded."I just don't even understand what happened." I sniffed.
"Well," someone said and we all turned around, seeing a white woman with a black blazer, a pencil skirt, her hair in a perfect bun with light blue eyes. She looked like an actual Barbie doll.
"Trina was found dead inside her home July 18th. Mekais car was seen leaving her driveway with her neighbors security cameras. They used his license plate and identified him. There was no real witness, so we have a little bit to work with here." She explained opening up a briefcase and pulling out of papers. She laid them out on the table we were all sitting at and everyone payed attention.
"These are screen captures of Mr. Brown leaving her home. His face isn't visible, because of the black hoodie. All they have is his license plate." She paused and we all nodded.
"This makes everything worse, honestly. Unless someone is willing to say they were using his car, then they would obviously point at Mr. Brown as guilty. There's no gun at the scene, no fingerprints, no anything." She finished and I started crying again.
"Baby, calm down." Miko pouted before pulling me into a hug."I-I just don't want him to go to j-jail for l-life." I sniffed.
"Oh, he definitely won't get life ma'am." She said and I sat up.
"The maximum they can give my client is 5 years. With no real evidence, I would be surprised if they gave him that much. Now, you've gotta understand, my name is Valisa. I don't lose in the courtroom. I won't allow them to give him anything more than 5 years and that's a promise." She said and I nodded, giving a small smile.
I just pray she's telling the truth.1 month later..
I rubbed my 2 month stomach and hissed at the pain in my feet. I knew I wouldn't be able to wear heels so I wore my black flats, an all black blazer and a white shirt underneath. My hair was bone straight, down to my ass. Today was Mekais court date and I was so nervous.
My heart was in my stomach.Valisa had all her evidence lined up and in a row, but I still didn't have that much hope. All they had was his license plate and nothing against Trina. Everything was stacked against him.
I grabbed my Chanel purse and walked downstairs. The kids were with my mom and she insisted on keeping them for the past week. I've been all over the place.I grabbed my keys and went out to my car, got in and pulled off.
My mind was racing as I drove to the courthouse.
All I can do is pray that my baby makes it out.
My baby? Nah, I'm crazy.
20 minutes later, I pulled up to the courthouse and fixed myself up. I stepped out of the car and I sighed seeing Mekai step out of a van with his hands behind his back.
He didn't look the same at all. He looked depressed all over again. I shook off my thoughts and grabbed my purse, walking into the courthouse.Once I figured out which courtroom we were in, I sat down with Meijai and Anita, and Ash and Miko sat behind me for support. Those are my best friends.
A few more people walked in and some of them kept mugging everyone on this side. I'm assuming that's Trinas family.
"All rise." The bailiff said and everyone stood up.
"Department 1 of the Superior Court is now in session. Judge Dallas presiding. Please be seated. " He said and we all sat back down."Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Calling the case of Jackson versus Brown. Are both sides ready?" He asked and both lawyers said yes.
"Your honor, my client has been accused of the murder of 22 year old, Trina Jackson. He has entered a plea of.. guilty?" She said, it came out like a question. My heart stopped and I looked over at Mekai who had no emotions on his face.
"He told me he was pleading not guilty." Meijai whispered to me and I shook my head. I couldn't believe this."Your honor, Trina Jackson is the biological mother of Mr. Browns first child. Ms. Jackson faked their child's death, with the excuse that Mr. Brown cheated on her. She paid off the hospital, where the child was being treated for brain cancer, to say that he passed away. Your honor, I believe my client has the right to hard or harsh feelings towards Ms. Jackson." Valisa said sounding completely professional.
"We also have reason to believe that Mr. Brown lied about the entire thing. I have court documents stating Mr. Brown abused Ms. Jackson and their child." Trinas lawyer said and all eyes were on Mekai.
"Is this true?" The judge asked.
"No, your honor. I never laid a hand on either of them." He said and the judge nodded.
"Continue." He said and Mekais lawyer cleared her throat.
"Mr. Douglass, I have documents that prove everything you just said a lie. Mr. Brown filed for full custody of Mekai Junior in 2015, when their child came home from the hospital for the first time. He claimed Ms. Jackson wasn't providing proper medical care for him. I-""WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH MY DAUGHTER BEING KILLED?" Trinas mom screamed and the judge banged his mallet.
"ORDER IN THE COURT." He demanded and I heard crying from the other side of the courtroom.
"As I was saying, I have reason to believe that Ms. Jackson and Ms. Bryant have some bad blood." She said glancing at me and my heart stopped for the 100th time today."Objection." Trinas lawyer said.
"Overruled, continue Mrs. Romano." The judge said and I took a deep breath.
"These are screen shots of social media posts and comments from Ms. Jackson, specifically to harass Ms. Bryant. A fight between these two ladies has happened before, and I think Mr. Brown had a reason not to trust Ms. Jackson around." She said and the jury started whispering amongst each other."Your honor, Mr. Brown did in fact abuse my client. These are photos of her bruises and proof of her medical bills from 2015." Her lawyer said and handed the judge some papers.
"These are from 2 months ago." He said straight facing him and I held back a laugh.
"The jury may deliberate, I need a beer." I heard him mumbling the last part and a laugh came out. After about 20 minutes, they came to a decision.
"Your honor, the jury finds the defendant not guilty."
