I allowed my body to sink deeper into the heavy pillows and throws of blankets dad insisted on decorating the living room couch with. Ravi was watching some show on the TV, on the edge of his seat in the armchair.
I slide out my phone from my pocket, readjusting my position on the sofa. Opening up Instagram, I go to James' account and into the bar of people he follows. A quick search later, and I've got Kade's profile in front of me. Westbrook is his last name apparently, which makes his username 'KWest' more understandable. Could he be a Kanye fan? That'd be a red flag.
Several of his pictures are tagged in Camrose, just outside of Edmonton in Canada. No bio, and only a few pictures. Him and his friends, sitting somewhere. Some holiday celebration. A picture of Kade in a suit, probably headed somewhere nice...
"Just because you haven't developed yet, doesn't mean the rest of us haven't. I can smell you for miles bro, go be horny somewhere else.", Ravi complains, not even turning his head from the drama on screen.
"You couldn't 'smell me for miles', idiot. And do you need to say it like that?", I whine. There's no reason to so loudly proclaim my obvious predicament.
"'Course I do, I'm your big brother. Besides, what are you looking at?", he asks, before shooting up and with unexpected speed and grabbing my phone from my hands.
"Hey!", I scream out, trying to get up but it's like the couch is trying to pull me back down.
Ravi walks out of reach, rounding the coffee table before holding up min phone and then looking pointedly at me with a smug expression.
"You tryna hit up my boy?", he asks, smile on his face and with a playful voice that expertly masks his intent. I have no idea if he's mad or not, seeing as he spoke of Kade and how much he liked him first.
"He's not your boy! And we just met, I don't know the guy!", I whisper-shout back.
"Hey mum! Kash has a crush!", he screams up the stairs, making me groan and sit down again, elbows on my knees and face hidden in my hands.
"Really? Who?", I hear mum saying as her steps patter down the stairs, towards the living room.
Ravi walks up to her, standing close and showing the phone. She brings down her glasses from the top of her head before adjusting the screen and surveying the profile. I un-hide my face, wanting to get a hold of her reaction
"What a handsome young man. Kade, is it?", mum says in a high voice, looking up again. "Didn't you talk about a Kade just a few days ago, Ravi?", she then asks.
"Exactly, I did. Isn't it a little contentious of my dear little brother to go after my prey?", Ravi says, voice smooth and coaxing.
"We don't refer to people as 'prey', sweetheart...", my mum says sternly as she once again adjusts the screen to be able to see properly.
"He's just a boy. Neither of you know him, you just like the way he looks. Leave the handsome young fellow out of your bickering, spare him of that.", she says.
"Thank you, mum.", I say, rubbing my face. My brother was the single most dramatic being I'd ever encountered, always looking for reasons to disagree.
"You be nice to your brother, Ravi.", she says in a kind voice before turning stern. "And I'm serious about the 'prey' thing. That is dehumanizing and a horrible label to put on someone. I better not hear you referring to anyone like that again.", she adds, scolding my brother.
I throw a thank you after her as she walks back up the stairs, before grimacing against Ravi.
"That didn't go according to plan, did it?", I taunt him.
